A 4-year-old cancer patient had one extraordinary day, as she got to marry her favorite nurse in a fantastic ceremony at the hospital.
Abby is a 4 year old that has seen a lot of tough days in her short life. But with a strong will and a kind heart, she has plenty of fighting spirit to take on the challenges that come her way. And so, one day she decided that it would make her very happy to marry her favorite nurse, Matt Hickling.
Matt has been there at Abby’s side for all her long journey with cancer and they have grown extremely close. When Abby’s mom called him to let him know that Abby had decided to ask him this very important question, Matt thought that instead of smiling politely at her, they could actually make her very happy by staging a small ceremony.
And so they started preparing for the big day and they filled a hospital room with beautiful flowers for the ceremony. They even had a toy car that said “Just Married” on the back, like in the movies Abby likes.
The beautiful bride had a pretty white dress on and a white headband, like the ones she loves to wear every day. The dashing groom wore a tuxedo T-shirt to the great ceremony and he patiently waited for his bride to walk down the aisle of the hospital room.
Abby was thrilled to see everybody attending her and Matt’s wedding as she stepped though the flower petal isle while her loved ones hummed her a wedding song. When they were married, Abby and Matt put on their candy rings and shared a warm hug.
Then Abby got to ride around in their Just Married car and have some delicious wedding cake, and Matt was there with her all day. She said that it was “the best day ever!”
By staging this fantasy wedding, Matt Hickling made her little patient’s dream come true because this was something that stood in his power. She got to actually experience something that most little girls only dream of and it everybody had an amazing time.
“Our patient shyly asked me to marry her. I didn’t hesitate to say yes, I got a HUGE hug and we sealed the deal with ring pops being placed on our fingers!” Matt wrote on his Facebook page.
He proved that there are things that come at a very low price but that can make all the difference to their young patients and that it truly matters at the end of the day that you truly gave your all in doing your job.
