A young girl was shot to death while she was in her bedroom, working on her homework for school, on August 19. The girl’s name was Jamyla Bolden and she was just nine years old when she gave her last breath.
The shooting took place not far from West Florissant Avenue, in Fergusson Missouri. That was where people protested over the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was fatally shot by 28-year-old Fergusson police officer Darren Wilson, on August 9, 2014.
This crime was nothing like that, because the girl was shot in her own home, where she was supposed to feel the safest possible. Moreover, other members of her family were in the house. One of them was her grandmother, whose name was not revealed by the press because she preferred to stay anonymous, for safety reasons.
She told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she was the one who held the young girl in her arms after she was shot, until she gave her last breath. The woman owns the place where Jamyla was shot and was at home with her and her mother.
“I still have her blood on my hands. She was still breathing. I was telling her to just breathe,” she said in the statement she gave to the press.
Jamyla’s mother was also shot in the leg when the firing started and she was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, her wounds were not so severe and she was soon released from the hospital. The doctors are expecting her to make a full recovery from the injury.
James Bolden, Jamyla’s father, also spoke to the press: “I never in a million years thought that I’d be laying my daughter to rest,” he said.
He also kindly asked anyone who has information about the incident to report to the policeto help them find the one who was capable to do this : “Do it for a 9-year-old child that didn’t even get to see the rest of the world,” he added.
The investigators still have no suspect that could be related to the crime. A spokesman of the police said that the authorities believe the shots have been fired not far from Jamyla’s home. Ferguson Chief Andre Anderson stated that the investigators are doing everything they can to find the one who is responsible.
