A new study points out that a nap a day provides health benefits, as resting a while may lead to a good mood, while reducing blood pressure and decreasing the chances of suffering from a heart attack. Moreover, the midday snooze helps you gather new strength in complying with your daily endeavors.
40 percent of Americans are used to take a, let’s say, 2 PM nap. But if they would skip it, they would prove to be utterly less productive.
However, if you’re always tired in the afternoon, might imply poor health. A study from Cambridge revealed that oversleeping was bad, and people who would sleep more than 1 hour at midday had a 32 percent higher risk of dying. To be more precise, longer naps are tied to respiratory illnesses.
Another study was conducted by the European Society of Cardiology in London and was presented during this weekend. In contradiction to the study conducted in Cambridge, this particular study pointed out that naps might just save your life.
So, the second study’s lead author said that the more participants slept, the lower their blood pressure. Moreover, it’s interesting that they claimed those who slept more than an hour would reap the most benefits.
But health experts did say that if you wanted to feel alert, shorter naps would do the trick. To be more precise, a 10 to 20 minute nap was indeed highly beneficial. The longer you sleep, your body enters the deep stages of sleep, which might make you unsteady and dazed when you wake up. 90 minutes would be enough to complete your sleep cycle.
The study involved 400 men and women, who had reached their middle age, and was aimed at proving that people who slept a while in the afternoon would exhibit lower blood pressure, unlike those who stayed awake all day. Midday sleepers displayed a 5 percent lower blood pressure, in comparison to their peers who wouldn’t nap.
The European Society of Cardiology scientific team revealed that the people involved in the study displayed lower blood pressure in two instances: while being awake and while sleeping that next night.
Beware of drinking too many cups of coffee daily (about four or more), as caffeine affects the health of people, increasing blood pressure and this might lead to a heart attack later on, according to a different study. This specific study lasted for about 12 years and involved people aged 18 to 45. It was aimed at demonstrating that heavy coffee drinking was correlated with circulatory system problems and cardiac events, including heart attack.
Basically, each person needs to sleep according to their needs, while a Stanford University researcher said that if you would dream during your approximate 20 minute nap, you probably needed more sleep at night instead.
