One of the biggest surprises of the last year comes from Amazon. We are of course talking about Alexa voice agent which made a beautiful show at this year’s edition of CES. Alexa struck collaborations with Ford, Hyundai, Huawei, Whirlpool, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, Mattel, ADT, and Dish Network.
Alexa voice agent made a slow but safe advance. It began its activity by collaborating with smaller startups, such as Ooma, TrackR or Invoxia. Then, it aimed higher and achieved such progress that some even declared it the winner of voice controlled agents. Despite the fiery and even aggressive introduction Alexa had, it might not score as proficient in user experience, distribution, and knowledge graph.
First of all, Amazon faced bitter failure when trying to enter the war on voice control over smartphones. When it comes to auto industry, some important collaborations in the field have been announced at CES. However, the biggest names in the industry are already putting Siri or Google Assistant at use in their vehicles. Regarding TV market, the leader position is held by Samsung and they are more likely to promote their Viv-derived agent. There is no need to mention that Apple TV already has their voice companion Siri available and devices such as Xbox One or Sony TV will most likely use Cortana or Google Assistant.
Amazon may face fierce competition. Google announced at CES 2017 that they are planning to advance many steps in the voice control wars by using their new acquired technology on artificial intelligence. And Google has all the chances to win. All smartphone users are likely to choose a voice assisting app using a technology that is already familiar to them. Also, Android smartphones use a varied set of Google services and they will most probably receive an update from Google regarding the voice companion, too, rather than using a whole new service.
Amazon’s Alexa is only at the beginning. Their start is a promising one and their technology truly innovative. They will require quite a lot of time to optimize everything and have the market ready for what they are offering. Also, they are already facing tough competition and the opponents are willing to embark on a long journey of rivalry.
