Apple has just made an unexpected announcement as its AI department will be revealing, for the first time ever, its AI Research.
Earlier this Week, Ruslan Salakhutdinov made an unexpected announced during the Neural Information Processing Systems conference.
The Neural Processing System Information annual conference is currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain. As it began on Monday, December 05, it will span throughout the week and end Sunday, on December 10.
The conferences are focused on computational neurosciences and multi-track machine learning demonstrations, presentations, talks, and symposia.
However, the conference seems to have already revealed its first surprise. The aforementioned Salakhutdinov is a machine learning associate professor at the Carnegie Mellon University.
He is also Apple’s newest AI research director. As part of the company’s presentation slideshow, one slide revealed that Apple will be publishing its research in the domain.
This is a first time ever for both the AI research domain and the company in general as Apple is quite notorious for not sharing data and information.
As such, most see this as an abrupt change when compared to the company’s usual in-house research results.
Some consider the change as being a way of advancing and regaining their status. Recent reports seem to suggest that other AI systems have caught up with Apple’s Siri.
Others suggest that the well-known chatbot may have even been surpassed by similar technology from other companies.
Analysts believe that one possible cause for this lack in advances may be the fact the Apple was closed-lipped about its results.
Yan LeCunn, an AI veteran and the head of Facebook Artificial Intelligence pointed out some facts. According to LeCunn, publishing and sharing research results is highly important in this domain.
Such practices are commonly used, although they may contribute to losing some of the developer’s rights over the discovery.
However, the sharing is mostly beneficial as it may also attract new intelligence to the respective project.
According to the aforementioned LeCunn, it is quite difficult to hire new members to the program when no information about it can be revealed.
Salakhutdinov himself seems to confirm and prove this belief. During the conference, the Artificial Intelligence researcher drew out some of the company’s plans.
The Apple AI director stated that the company will now be allowing its researchers to publish their papers on the subject.
Apple will also be seeking to join and be a part of the larger AI community as the said group seems to be enlarging.
Companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Facebook have already formed a coalition. The coalition’s goals are to communicate with the public and offer information about AI technology.
It also seeks to collaborate and establish the best practices for the AI research and development.
Currently, Apple is not a member of the aforementioned community, but in the future, it may seek to join it.
According to the same Salakhutdinov, Apple’s AI research reveal goal is as follows. By sharing their data, the company is seeking to attract and to retain the industry’s top talent.
It is also seeking to ensure that such talents remain in the domain. Most of the current top AI researchers are very involved with the respective community.
It is quite a common practice to attend conferences, publish AI research papers, or take part in open-source projects.
All of these practices are targeting a careful and safe development of the machines’ artificial intelligence.
