Apple’s Siri will be getting smarter as the company hired an AI expert that will boost the system and make it more competitive.
As Apple has been changing and redesigning some of its products and advancing even their product security measures, with their stores now featuring a cordless security system, one area that seemed to have stayed the same was their AI systems.
Apple has been recently acquiring quite a number of technology-related companies the likes of Perceptio, Mapsense, Emotient, Tuplejump, VocalIQ, Semetric, and Coherent Navigation to name just a few as CEO, Tim Cook, announced them to be part of the company’s wish for a new, incredible future.
Besides the contribution of the aforementioned companies, Apple’s AI system will also receive a boost from a team of artificial intelligence specialists led by Russ Salakhutdinov.
Salakhutdinov, who is a professor at the Carnegie Melon University and will not be leaving his position, has announced the news on his personal Twitter account.
In the same tweet, the researcher offered a position in his new team of scientists by posting a link to Apple’s website and advertising the open machine learning researcher positions.
Salakhutdinov, whose areas of research include the deep learning mechanism of artificial intelligence, could play a major role in Apple’s future projects as the company has recently been increasingly more active in the area.
The company has created its own division for machine learning and will be opening an R&D facility that will concentrate on AI applications that can learn and evolve.
As Apple CEO envisions a bright future in which most of the company devices will include AI applications it is true that there is still a lot more work left to do before this dream comes true.
The addition of an AI team of scientist led by Russ Salakhutdinov may be just one, albeit an important step in this direction, with the researchers potentially contributing to Siri’s development.
The field of AI has registered significant advances after graphics processing units (GPUs) started being used. The GPUs, together with specialized computer chips, help process more information and coupled with an increase in cloud computing has come to mean an easier, larger storage space for the huge amount of data needed by modern technologies.
Neural networks, a special type of software, can find patterns in the aforementioned large amounts of data which can lead to a better, more accurate learning process for digital assistant the likes of Apple’s Siri.
This will also mean that AI-powered digital assistant will develop a better understanding of both people’s questions and voices and will offer better answers and request responses.
