Researchers discovered a new field where they can apply artificial intelligence technology. This new AI use has the potential to save many lives and can be one of the best fields where such technology can be used. Artificial intelligence became better at recognizing cancer than many pathologists.
Google has advanced many steps in the field of research that involves artificial intelligence. They have already found many applications of AI, both when it comes to ways to save energy or even photo recognition. Google even had many brave attempts and projects related to health, but this particular one is probably the most ambitious.
Researchers studied how artificial intelligence can be of help in the field of medicine, particularly in the diagnosis of cancer. This is quite a difficult job for medical professionals, and AI promises to simplify it and offer a second opinion.
Pathologists usually have to look at magnified images with resolutions usually bigger than 10 gigapixels to identify malignant tumors. These are magnified up to 40 times and the process takes quite a lot of time and requires a lot of concentration from the doctors.
Google took these pictures of tumors and have its AI look at them. After a short training that the artificial intelligence had to perform, it was given a limited period of time to analyze the images, but it returned an 89 percent success rate.
On the other hand, the pathologist had an unlimited period of time to look at the images and had barely a 73 percent success rate. However, we must mention that Google’s artificial intelligence returned false positive answers. When such a terrible disease like cancer is involved, these false results might lead to terrible consequences.
Google assured those who look at artificial intelligence with judging eyes that their goal was not to replace pathologists, but rather make their job easier. The AI may identify potential cells that could be cancerous and then return the result to the expert, who has to analyze the images more thoroughly and put the final diagnosis.
Also, the diagnosis of cancer does not only depend on images. Many other factors need to be taken into consideration, so the role of a medical expert is vital.
Some might be skeptical about making too much use of artificial intelligence, but in some cases it might make our tasks easier and improve the quality of our lives.
