However, aspartame-sweetened Pepsi fans should not be too disappointed because the beverage will still be available for sale but only online.
This may come as a surprise to many people, given the fact that the company announced it would withdraw beverages that contain aspartame. Nevertheless, it was consumers who had the last say in the decision and apparently they are prepared to take risks and still drink the dangerous beverage.
Thus, after conducting surveys and getting customer feedback, they decided to make it available where it is less visible – the Internet.
Diet soda used to be incredibly popular a couple of decades ago. Throughout the years, a lot has changed because people all over the world have become more aware of the fact that aspartame and artificial sweeteners are incredibly unhealthy and have often been associated to various types of cancer and other diseases. Moreover, they are not as good for dieting as it was previously thought.
PepsiCo recently spoke about their plans to release a new type of diet soda on the market, one that will use sucralose, which, according to Indra Nooyi, the company’s chief executive, is a “very good product.” Seth Kaufman, the vice president of the company, said that the new beverage will have a “slightly different mouth feel ” but it will still be recognizable as Diet Pepsi. The new drink is scheduled to become available this summer.
The company’s decision was announced on Thursday, July 9th, during a meeting with investors. However, PepsiCo did not want to give further details about the matter to the press.
Even if there is still demand for aspartame-sweetened Pepsi, the sales have dropped enormously in the past years. It was reported that there has been a decrease by 5.9 percent in 2014 only.
This decline was recorded with most types of soda available on the market over the last few years. People started to prefer healthier options, such as water or fruit juice instead of soda. Some companies have started to withdraw their soda drinks from the menus available for children.
Therefore, it is no wonder companies such as Coca Cola or Pepsi have started to look for healthier options in the products they will release on the market.
