Utah Man Named as Person of Interest in Abandoned Mine Shaft Murder

April 2, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Abandoned Mine Shaft Murder

The authorities believe that the odious abandoned mine shaft murder might have been partly motivated by jealousy.

On Wednesday, the Utah authorities announced that they’ve discovered and arrested a person of interest in the abandoned mine shaft murder. Jerrod W. Baum, 41, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, abuse of a dead body, and kidnapping among others.

Abandoned Mine Shaft Murder Was Jealousy Related, Authorities Believe

The events that led to the arrest of Baum started to unfold on the 2nd of January when the families of 18-year-old Riley Powell and 17-year-old Brelynne Otteson filed a missing person’s report with the Utah police. According to the document, the couple was last seen alive on the 30th of December 2017, leaving for Baum’s home.

This Wednesday, following a 911 call, the authorities retrieved two bodies from an abandoned mine shaft, located 75 miles from Salt Lake City. The coroner’s office established that the bodies belong to the couple who went missing in December.

Several hours later, Baum was taken into custody and charged with murder.

During his police interview, the man confessed to killing the couple and admitted that it was a hard thing to do but had no choice.

After putting all the pieces together, the investigators discovered that Baum’s gesture was partly motivated by jealousy. The man said that he grew tired of Otteson and Powell visiting Morgan Henderson, his girlfriend.

According to Henderson’s testimony, Baum got mad at her after returning home to see her in the company of the Utah couple. Baum allegedly told her that he couldn’t stand to see her in the company of other men and boasted that he’s going to kill the couple.

Conclusion

On the 30th of December, Baum arranged for Otteson and Powell to meet at Morgan’s house. After smoking marijuana inside the house, the man allegedly assaulted the teens, tied them up and threw them in Powell’s jeep.

He then told Morgan to get in the car as they were going for a drive. Baum drove to the abandoned mine shaft in Powell’s jeep, stabbed both teens to death, and threw their bodies in the shaft.

Before dumping Powell’s jeep into the river, he told Morgan to keep quiet about what transpired that evening.

Missing Georgia Teen Rescued with Snapchat

A friend of the family used Snapchat to track down the missing Georgia teen.

Georgia authorities have confirmed that missing Amber Austin was found safe on Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Department credits the finding and rescue of 15-year-old missing Georgia teen to a friend of the family. The woman discovered a picture of Amber posted on her Snapchat account earlier that day.

Missing Georgia Teen Abducted by Ex-Con Posing as Woman

According to the Amber Austin’s case report, the 15-year-old went missing around Saturday from her grandmother’s Gordon County home. The authorities believe that the teenager might have been in contact with an individual over Snapchat. Later, it was confirmed that 34-year-old Dayton Koop, Austin’s kidnapper, posed as a woman while chatting with the teen and enticed her into meeting him.

It’s not yet clear whether Austin went to Koop’s home or if the kidnapper picked her up from the teen’s grandmother’s house. On Wednesday morning, Dakota Moss, a 27-year-old Gordon County woman and close friend to Austin’s family, saw that Amber posted a new picture on her Snapchat account.

The woman beseeched Amber’s family to seize this opportunity to find the missing Georgia teen. Moss told the reporters that after she drove to the man’s home, she saw Koop running to the back of his house. Amber’s friend promptly called the Sheriff’s Department who managed to track down and apprehend the suspect. The missing Georgia teen was later discovered in Koop’s SUV.

She didn’t appear to be injured, only scared. Koop was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping and unruliness with a minor.

Conclusion

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect has an extensive criminal record, having been accused of breaking into a home in 2011 and raping a woman. Following a brief trial, which ended with a protection order, Koop was allowed to walk a free man out of the courtroom.

Sacramento Police Officers Gun Down Suspect Holding a Cellphone

March 21, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Sacramento Police Officer Gunned Down Unarmed Suspect

At least two Sacramento police officers were placed on live following the incident.

Following a coordinated police action on Sunday, at least two officers were placed on administrative leave pending an internal disciplinary investigation. The officers allegedly gunned down a carjacking suspect who was holding an object resembling a pistol in his hand. No police officers were injured in action.

Sacramento Police Officers Observed All Procedures, Authorities Confirmed

According to a Sacramento Police Department spokesperson, on Sunday evening, the authorities were summoned to the 7500 block of 29th Street after a caller told them that an unknown individual donning a hoodie and dressed in dark-colored clothes was attempting to steal a couple of cars in the area.

The authorities arrived a couple of minutes later and were assisted in the suspect’s search by a police helicopter. After circling the area, the helicopter’s crew spotted the suspect in a homeowner’s backyard and directed the ground offers towards him.

Allegedly, after the arresting officers approached the individual, he panicked and fled. The Sacramento Police Officer pursued him on foot. Once more, the helicopter crew would redirect the officers to the suspect’s location, who fled south, towards someone front yard.

The officers followed and allegedly caught the individual trying to break into a car. According to the records, the arresting officers ordered the individual to stand down. At that point, the individual drew out a long and black object, resembling a firearm and pointed it towards the police officers.

Conclusion

Believing that the individual was about to open fire, the Sacramento Police Officers opened fire. The suspect, later identified by the coroner’s office as 22-year-old Stephon Clark, was declared dead at the scene.

A search of the area failed to produce the firearm used to threaten the authorities. Instead, the forensic team discovered a cellphone near Clark’s body. Following the incident, at least two Sacramento police officers were placed on administrative leave.

Amazon Developers Baffled by Alexa’s Spontaneous Laughter

March 8, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Amazon and Echo

Amazon has still to figure out why Alexa is laughing without being triggered.

How would you feel if you Amazon Echo device would laugh like a manic in the dead of night? No, it’s not a horror movie’s plot, but an actual bug that has been plaguing Amazon Echo devices all over the world and the developers haven’t the slightest idea about what’s triggering it.

Amazon Alexa Laughing Trigger Still Not Known

According to an Amazon spokesperson, over the last couple of months, several Amazon Echo users reported that their Alexa-powered device simply starts laughing out of the blue, with no one talking to the intelligent home device.

One user told customer service that during a board meeting, their Echo, which was placed in the middle of the table, let out peculiar laughter. The developers declared that Alexa might have acted that way because she might have heard something resembling her laughing command.

Another user recalled sitting in the living room with his mother when all of a sudden, Alexa started laughing. Although startled, at first, both of them smiled back at each other and unplugged their Echo device.

As explained by one of Amazon’s developers, while Alexa’s is on, it will analyze every sound she hears and approximates it to a pre-programmed voice command.  The most plausible explanation for Alexa’s spontaneous laughter can be that the smart device might have misunderstood commands.

However, as the company declared, the device appears to laugh on its own even when there’s no one nearby. To this end, the developers have changed the voice command from ‘Alexa, laugh.’ to ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’.

Although the developers changed the voice trigger, they still don’t have any idea why Alexa emits that sound. Meanwhile, you should update your Amazon Echo in order to avoid this creepy bug from emerging. You should also check Amazon’s website regularly for tips on how to improve you assistant’s functions.

Indonesian Boy Baffles Doctors After Laying 20 Chicken Eggs

February 22, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Chicken eggs.

A 14-year-old boy from Indonesia claims that he has laid 20 chicken eggs since 2015.

A 14-year-old boy from Gowa, the regency in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province, has managed to baffle doctors for the past three years after laying 20 chicken eggs. The doctors admitted they are indeed chicken eggs but believe that the boy or his father might have shoved the eggs inside the teen’s rectum for the purpose of maintaining the illusion.

14-Year-old Indonesian Boy Claims Laying His First Chicken Eggs in 2015

Akmal, a 14-year-old from the South Sulawesi province, has become the subject of debate in various medical circles after the boy and his father claim that he began laying chicken eggs in 2015 and never stopped.

According to Akmal’s father, the boy’s ‘ability’ is legitimate, with no ‘voodoo’ or foul play involved. The man told the doctors that his son that over the past three years, Akmal laid 20 chicken eggs, one or two per month.

He also added that in order to convince himself of his son’s ability, he cracked a few of the eggs that he laid. On the first month, the man cracked an egg and said that the contents were all yellow. One month later, he cracked another one and claimed that its contents were all white, with no traces of yellow.

In order to determine whether Akmal’s case is legitimate, the boy and his father were taken to the Syech Yusuf Hospital where the boy laid two eggs in front of the doctors.

Although from a scientific standpoint Akmal’s accomplishments border on the impossible, as chicken eggs could not survive inside the human digestive tract, doctors are unable to explain how the boy does it.

Some of the more skeptical doctors declared that they are convinced either the boy or his father shoved eggs inside Akmal’s rectum in order to make it look like the teenage is laying eggs.

New Study Reveals Molecular Similarities Between Major Psychiatric Disorders (Study)

February 12, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

neural structure against blue background

The molecular similarities between the psychiatric disorders might develop better treatments.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) compared slices of brain from a consortium of individuals. By comparing ribonucleic acid (RNA) and gene activity in brain cells, they discovered molecular similarities between some of the major known psychiatric disorders. This study paves the way for further research and new methods of treating mental illnesses.

A Deeper Look Inside

UCLA neuroscientists Dan Geschwind and Mike Gandal wanted to compare the role RNA and gene activity from the cerebral cortex play in mental illness.

The outer layer of the brain, the cerebral cortex, is known for controlling attention, awareness, memory, and other high cognitive functions. RNA plays a role in gene activity, including gene expression and coding. It also contains information that directs how specific proteins are synthesized.

Building upon the work of the global Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, Gershwin’s and Gandal’s team took 293 control samples from people without any known mental illness, and 197 samples from people with inflammatory bowel disease.

They also took 700 samples from individuals with major psychiatric disorders, including alcoholism, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. The researchers compared gene expression patterns between the samples to look for biological similarities in their gene activity.

The new study showed molecular similarities in the major psychiatric disorders. For instance, autism, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia presented a reduction in the expression of neuronal firing genes.

However, schizophrenia and autism shared a possible overexpression of other genes and high levels of gene activity. They did not return the same type of results as the other samples.

Gandal’s and Gershwin’s results show substantial work is still to be done in understanding what role variations in gene activity play in the manifestation of specific illnesses. However, finding similarities at a molecular level provides new insights into why certain treatments do not work. It may also help develop new ones.

Flagler County Jail Hangs Up Vacancy Sign

February 11, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Flagler County Jail sign.

Flagler County Jail hangs up amusing vacancy sign to intimidate people breaking the law.

Because being a police officer doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t need to have a sense of humor, we bring you the story of Rick Staly, the Flagler County Sheriff, who recently found an unusual way to tell people that it’s never a good idea to break the law.

Flagler County Jail Dubbed a One-Star Motel

In keeping with the times and the ever-increasing crime rate, Rick Staly, the Flagler County Sheriff, thought that the best way to fight crime is through humor. Outside the Flagler County Jail, which, at the moment, holds approximately 217 inmates, the Sheriff and his deputies hung up a neon-lit sign.

People who passed by the county jail could see that the big building is not really a detention center, but a luxurious vacation motel. Dubbed the Green Roof Inn, Staly’s resort has all kind of accommodations, included around-the-clock vacancy.

Under the resorts neon-lit sign, there’s also a red-light ‘vacancy’ sign. And because no respectable establishment should be without accommodations, the Sheriff has had the courtesy of enumerating each and every one of them.

Once someone is booked into the Green Roof Inn, he will have 5-star accommodations such as no privacy, group showers & bathrooms, no meal selection, free transportation to local landmarks such as the courthouse or state prison, designer jewelry to wear (handcuffs and leg irons), and free designer clothing – color coordinated jumpsuit and shoes.

On top of that, Staly declared that the Flagler County jail is now a one-star motel and that he and his deputies are working hard in order to make the rating even lower.

For those who complete their tour, Staly has prepared another sign which says that the inn’s doors are always open for those who seek accommodation. The Sheriff’s sign was taped and posted on the County Sheriff’s official Facebook page.

Motel Squabble Ends in High-Speed Chase and Attempted Murder

February 5, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Motel Squabble gone wrong

Motel squabble nearly ended in tragedy as suspect rammed a woman’s car during a high-speed chase.

A Visalia motel was recently the scene of a jealousy-fueled argument that could have ended in tragedy. Following the motel squabble, a 22-year-old man was arrested after allegedly trying to murder a woman and her boyfriend during a high-speed chase.

Management Did Not Witness the Motel Squabble

According to the Visalia Police Department, the event took place on Friday night at Murphy’s Motel, located near the King Avenue. At approximately 4:30 a.m., a woman, who wished to remain anonymous, started to argue with 22-year-old Luis Salazar-Moreno, possibly her former boyfriend.

The woman later told the authorities that the argument took place inside her room. Seeing that the man did not budge, the woman decided to leave the motel room. She also told the authorities that Salazar-Moreno attempted to restrain her, but she managed to escape.

Once in the parking lot, the woman met another man, climbing into the car and left Murphy’s motel. According to the affidavit, the woman saw Salazar-Moreno tailing her through the motel’s parking lot and, later on, during their drive.

Realizing that Salazar-Moreno was following their car, the driver hit the gas break, in an attempt to get away from him. However, according to the woman, Salazar-Moreno managed to catch up with them and rammed their vehicle several times.

Both drivers stopped, and the woman called the authorities. Salazar-Moreno was later taken into custody and charged with false imprisonment and assault using a deadly weapon. The man was booked into county jail with a $100,000.

Conclusion

During the police interview, several members of the staff, including the motel’s manager, declared that they’ve not heard the couple arguing nor were they aware of anything out of the ordinary happening at that moment.

The motel squabble which could have ended in tragedy is still being investigated.

15th Century Voynich Manuscript to be Deciphered Using AI

February 2, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Voynich Manuscript

University of Alberta scientists used AI to decipher the Voynich Manuscript.

Since its discovery in 1912, the Voynich manuscript has proved to be a challenge for historians and cryptographers alike. Carbon dated to the 15th century, the manuscript has yet to be deciphered, but progress is being made as a team of scientists from the University of Alberta announced that applying AI-based algorithms has proved fruitful.

Could Machine Learning Decipher the Mysterious Voynich Manuscript?

A team of researchers from Canada’s University of Alberta might be on the right track to discover the meaning of the seemingly ambiguous writings contained by the 15thcentury Voynich manuscript. Using AI-based cryptography algorithms, the scientists started by addressing the manuscript’s language of origin.

Although many have speculated that the scroll might have been written in ancient Arabic, the AI analysis revealed that it’s actually ancient Hebrew. Greg Kondrak, a University of Alberta professor and one of the members involved in the recent attempt to decrypt the Voynich manuscript, declared that the AI cross-referenced the writing on the 240-page long manuscript with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which contains a database of 400 languages.

Upon feeding in the data into the AI, Kondrak and his colleagues discovered that approximately 80 percent of the words were in ancient Hebrew. To test out this new assumption, the researchers called in ancient Hebrew specialists and also tried running the processed text through Google Translate.

Baffling enough, the sentence processed by Google Translate was grammatically sound and could be further interpreted. It might not be much, the professor added, but this is definitely a great starting point.

According to Kondrak, the sentence that came out of Google Translate read:

She made recommendations to the priest, man of the house and me and the people.

Conclusion

At the moment, the team is working on improving the algorithm’s recognition rate and perhaps apply it to other ancient manuscripts.

First-Grader Arrested After Allegedly Punching Elementary School Teacher

January 29, 2018 By Dave Smith 1 Comment

First-Grader Assault

First-grader handcuffed and removed from school after assaulting a teacher.

A 7-year-old student at Miami’s Coral K-8 Center was handcuffed and removed from the principal’s office after the boy allegedly punched an elementary school teacher. In accordance with the Baker Act, the first grader was taken to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Mother Outraged as First Grader Walks out in Handcuffs

Because Hell hath no fury for a mother scorned, Mercy Álvarez, the mother of 7-year-old first-grader who was recently handcuffed and taken to Children’s Hospital by a police officer, declared that this is yet another example of police abuse and that she intends to press charges against the school and the police department.

According to Ian Moffett, the Miami-Dade Chief of Police, the officer summoned to the institution operated in accordance with the Florida Mental Health Act or Baker Act which dictates that an individual can be restrained and brought in for a psychiatric evaluation if he or she is in danger of hurting others or themselves.

The alleged incident took place on Thursday, in the Coral K-8 Center’s cafeteria. The boy was allegedly removed from the cafeteria for his erratic behavior and taken to the hall where he was scolded by one of the elementary school’s teachers.

During the conversation with the teacher, Álvarez allegedly became violent and began punching and kicking the teacher in her back. The event took a turn for the worst when the boy knocked down the teacher and continued kicking her.

After being immobilized, the first-grader was taken to the principal’s office who decided to notify the authorities. According to the boy’s mother, this isn’t the first time the school’s administration decided to call in the police because of her child, and that the same police officer showed both times.

Citing the Baker Act, the police officer handcuffed the first-grader and took him to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. The boy was released later that day, but the mother is bent on pressing charges against the school and the Miami-Dade Police.
