Maricopa County Man Arrested for Concealing Body Parts in Bucket

January 25, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Camper concealing body parts

Maricopa County homeless man charged with concealing body parts.

Maricopa County authorities recently arrested a 51-year-old homeless man for burglary and concealing body parts. The man was discovered hiding a human head in a bucket with the intent of preserving it. Authorities determined that the remains belonged to an individual who committed suicide in 2017.

Mentally Ill Man Accused of Concealing Body Parts

According to Maricopa County Police Department, Matthew David Hall, a 51-year-old homeless person, was recently arrested in the desert area of the county after the authorities discovered that he was hoarding decomposing body parts.

Hall, who’s mentally ill, told the authorities that last year, he was hanging around the camper belonging to Daniel Lucas, a 73-year-old campground resident. Wanting to see Lucas, Hall went up to the camper and knocked on his door several times.

Receiving no answer, Hall told the authorities that he used a stone in order to break one of the camper’s windows. Once inside, he found the body of the 73-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head in an advanced state of decomposition.

Hall allegedly took a rifle from the man’s camper and the handgun Lucas used in order to commit suicide. In addition to taking the firearms, Hall removed the body from the camper and placed Lucas’ head inside a rusty bucket.

When confronted by the Maricopa County deputies, the man declared that he didn’t murder the septuagenarian and that he merely wants to preserve the severed head by placing it in the bucket.

Hall was arrested and charged with burglary and concealing body parts. The coroner ruled out homicide as Lucas’ cause of death and corroborated Hall’s account. Lucas’ disappearance was reported at the beginning of 2017, but no one managed to find out what happened to him.

The psychiatrists determined that Hall, the man accused of concealing body parts, is mentally ill but did not disclose the nature of his affliction.

Man Finds Deadly Brazilian Spider in Banana Pack

Deadly Brazilian spider

West Midlands man find deadly Brazilian spider in banana pack.

A 55-year-old West Midlands resident had the shock of his life when he discovered a deadly Brazilian spider in the banana pack he bought from the supermarket. The critter was picked up by the RSPCA agents and donated to the Bristol Zoo. No one was hurt during the incident.

Deadly Brazilian Spider Pops Out of Banana Pack

Neil Langley is a 55-year-old West Midlands resident who’s been working for some time at the Department of Work and Pensions. The man recalled going to the local Asda supermarket for some groceries and picked up some bananas for his lunch pack.

While at work, the man reached into the pack in order to get banana but stopped for a second when he noticed that something was out of place. Upon taking a closer look, what looked like a foul fruit was actually an adult Brazilian wandering spider, one of the most venomous arachnids known to South America.

According to the RSPCA agents, Langley’s encounter with the little red-jawed critter could have ended badly. In most cases, the spider’s bit can cause priapism in men, a painful sexual dysfunction that causes the penis to stay erect for several hours.

Other symptoms associated with the Brazilian wandering spider’s bite include convulsions, blurred vision, nausea, generalized pain, sweating, and vertigo. Doctors declared that small children present a high risk when exposed to the spider’s venom, death occurring in just a few hours.

Fortunately, the RSPCA agents arrived on time and were successful in capturing and containing the deadly Brazilian spider. Langley, who declared that he’s somewhat of an arachnid lover, declared that, under these circumstances, he was a bit unnerved to find himself so close to one as dangerous as the Brazilian wandering spider.

The Brazilian stowaway was later donated to the Bristol Zoo. Langley said that he was in a meeting when the RSPCA agents came.

Dark Souls Gets PC Remaster, Bandai Namco Announced

January 14, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Dark Souls

Bandai Namco announted that Dark Souls Remastered will be launched in May.

Good news from Hidetaka Miyazaki, the evil mastermind behind the Dark Souls franchise. According to Hidetaka, Dark Souls is poised to get a PC remaster sometime this year. This will come as great news to fans who have been unable to get past the game’s failed PC-to-console port in order to enjoy Dark Soul’s twisted story.

Dark Souls Remastered Is on its Way

As you might recall, the first PC version of Dark Souls wasn’t exactly a smash hit mostly due to the fact that developers did not manage to optimize the PC version. Initially, a console-exclusive title, the high number of requests for a PC port determined the developers to make one available as soon as possible.

Needless to say that the rushed port version was not that well received by the gaming community, many gamers saying that it’s not worth the trouble. However, the game’s brooding story and, of course, it’s gut-wrenching combat system, made several modders burn the midnight oil to make the game playable.

And so, with the help of Durante’s DSFix, PC fans can now enjoy getting thrashed, smashed, gorged, and impaled in one of the most difficult TPS RPG in history.

And now, after releasing the Ringed City DLC, Miyazaki decided that it were time for amends and announced that the remastered version of the game would be available in May 2018. Game-wise, the remastered version will support 4K resolutions, 60 FPS, and enhanced visuals.

Conclusion

Dark Souls Remastered will also include the game’s DLC, Artorias of the Abyss. We don’t know for certain if the devs will tinker with the game’s mechanics, but we can certainly say for sure that the new version will remain faithful to the original one. So that’s bye-bye easy mode for Dark Souls. Stay tuned for more info on your favorite gut-wrenching game.

It Takes Only One Cigarette to Become a Daily Smoker, New Study Suggests

January 10, 2018 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Hand-rolled cigarette

New study points out that the difference between a non-smoker and daily smoker is one cigarette.

A new British study reveals that only one cigarette can turn a non-smoker into a daily smoker. According to the aforementioned study, approximately 69 percent of all adults take up smoking on a daily basis after their first cigarette, but not will turn this into a lifetime habit.

Can One Cigarette Really Turn You into a Daily Smoker?

Although the study conducted by the Queen Mary University of London might sound a tad dramatic, the numbers seem to back it back. Amassing data from four different smoke-related studies and approximately 200,000 interviews, the team of scientists led by Professor Peter Hajek, discovered that a total number of 69 percent of all respondents turned smoking in a daily habit right after sampling their first cigarette.

After crunching the numbers even further, Hajek’s team also uncovered that 60.3 percent of all interviewed individuals already tried their first cigarette and 68.3 percent of have begun smoking on a daily basis.

Despite the alarming numbers, Hajek pointed out that smoking among teens, aged 11 to 15, has exponentially decreased over the past decade. The study points out that only 19 percent of all youngster smoked their first.

So, smoking only one cigarette will turn me into a daily smoker? According to the study, there’s a 69 chance of that happening. However, as Hajek pointed out, the situation might just be temporary, meaning that there’s a chance you might ‘outgrow’ daily smoking.

More Health Concerns?

Professor Hajek’s study also touched a few other points of smoking, such as vaping. Compared to smoking normal cigarettes, it would appear that vapers have little to no odds of becoming daily consumers after their first whiff.

Furthermore, in accordance with the study, there is no proof to indicate that vaping is more addictive than smoking tobacco products.

Twenty-Year Old Mother Dies One Day After Being Diagnosed with the Flu

December 7, 2017 By Dave Smith 2 Comments

Medicine and thermometer on a white surface

The flu usually leads to death only one or two weeks after infection

A 20-year-old mother of two from Arizona tragically passed away on November 28th, only one day after receiving a flu diagnose. This struck her family members as the most unexpected thing that could have happened, as the woman was healthy, and they weren’t aware of her suffering from any life-threatening condition.

The woman kept coughing after getting the medication

One day, Alanie ‘Joie’ Murrieta came back early from her work. She said she wasn’t feeling very well, and her condition quickly worsened. Therefore, the next day, she went to an emergency clinic to receive treatment. When she got there, the doctors quickly diagnosed her with the flu, and prescribed her the medicine Tamiflu.

This medicine is good against influenza viruses of type A and B. Usually, it returns great results if taken within 48 hours after the person first gets infected. Murrieta took the medication as the doctors recommended, but things were still not getting better.

After she returned from the clinic, the woman kept coughing quite severely. As she was extremely tired, she went to sleep, but she continued coughing as the night lasted. The next day, she experienced some trouble breathing, so she went back to the hospital.

The flu later developed into pneumonia

There, the doctors saw how Murrieta’s oxygen levels severely dropped. After performing an X-ray, they observed how the flu quickly turned into pneumonia. They immediately administered her proper medication, but she still wasn’t getting better. After transferring her to the ICU, her heart stopped beating and she died.

This came as a shock to her family members, who said she was perfectly healthy and had no other condition which might make her condition worse. Usually, the flu might cause the death of a person only one or two weeks after the infection. This happens mostly because the disease might trigger another infection, or it might lead to complications of an already existing health condition.

Drinking Up to Four Cups of Coffee a Day Is Associated with Plenty of Health Benefits (Study)

November 27, 2017 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Drawing latte art in a cup of coffee

Four cups is the optimal quantity of coffee you can drink every day

Plenty of research brings evidence of the great health benefits of coffee, and a new study has just been added on the list. It seems that even heavy caffeine drinkers are safe from diseases, as scientists have discovered that drinking up to three and four cups of coffee per day has a protective effect.

Four cups of coffee a day is the ideal quantity

To put up this research, scientists analyzed over 200 older studies on caffeine consumption, and discovered it had a lot more benefits than harmful effects. Some might think that drinking coffee moderately is the secret, but the results revealed that even a higher quantity is good.

It turns out the perfect quantity of coffee a person can drink per day is between three and four cups. The results showed this is associated with a risk of death lower by 17 percent than the risk of people who don’t drink coffee at all. However, drinking even more is still beneficial. Consuming up to seven cups a day can still reduce your risk by 10 percent.

Four cups of coffee a day can decrease the risk of a series of cancers, including prostate, endometrial, skin, or liver. Also, the beverage can work wonders against diseases and conditions like depression, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and many others. Coffee consumption becomes harmful if it’s associated with other factors, such as smoking.

Some groups of people should avoid drinking coffee

Even if drinking up to four cups of coffee per day has health benefits, researchers do not advise people to start consuming the beverage just to cut certain health risks. In fact, certain categories should refrain from drinking it. The same benefits don’t apply to pregnant women who, by drinking coffee, risk giving birth prematurely or even pregnancy loss.

Four cups of coffee are great against diseases, but people should be careful not to overdo it. Also, when choosing the beverage, they should keep it as healthy as possible, and avoid adding extra cream or sugar. All the other details on the study have been published in the journal BMJ.

India Bailing Out Banks for $32 Billion

October 26, 2017 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Indian men wearing traditional suitsThe Indian government announced it would pour $32 billion into the struggling state-controlled banking system by 2020. The bulk of the money would go to the banks via recapitalization bonds, while a small portion would come from the market and budgetary support.

U.S. experts compared India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to the U.S. Troubled Asset Relief Program which was rolled out in the context of the 2008 financial crisis.

The new program will not affect the country’s fiscal deficit, expert said, because the amount of the debt is considered as “below-the-line” financing by the IMF. But since the country’s laws require bonds to be included in the budget deficit, we may see them listed separately as off-balance sheet items. The Indian government has done so in the 1990s with the bonds it issued back then.

Lending Unlikely to See Revival

It is highly unlikely that the government’s helping hand would boost lending as local banks need to first get rid of $191 billion in toxic assets before focusing on lending. What’s more, demand has been low in the last two decades, even though 70 percent of banks would like lending to experience a revival. That could help offset the costs of some low-performing loans.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the new bonds would look like and how much they would cost. After the government releases these details, analysts will be able to tell whether India faces a liquidity shortage. If the latest plan revives lending, Indians may have to cope with accelerated inflation, which could put on hold efforts to decrease the policy rate.

Most of the bonds will be likely bought by the banks as it had happened in the past. The funds could be later turned into equity in the long run, which is a win-win situation for bankers.

Woman Nearly Dies of Mysterious Syndrome after Pet’s Death

October 24, 2017 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Yorkshire Terrier PupJoanie Simpson, a 62-year-old woman from Texas, nearly died of a mysterious condition triggered by the death of her beloved dog. In the medical literature, the condition that mimics the classic signs of a heart attack is known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or the broken-heart syndrome.

The woman recalled that one day she woke up with chest pains and a backache. Her family rushed her to a local emergency room where doctors quickly transferred her to a hospital in Houston.

Houston medics were expecting a patient with a heart attack, but they were in for a big surprise. Multiple tests showed that the woman hadn’t had a heart attack but her heart was literally heartbroken after the loss of her cherished pet.

The woman acknowledged that after a stressful year, the death of her Yorkshire terrier, Meha, was the last straw.

I was close to inconsolable. I really took it really, really hard,

Simpson said about Meha’s death.

Grief For Pets Can Be as Devastating as the One for Humans

Doctors published a report about the Texas woman’s experience in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Study authors said that the paper was not spurred by the cause of the condition – the death of a pet – but for being a very “elegant case” which demonstrates that the broken-heart syndrome is real and can sometimes be deadly. The condition is triggered by the loss of a loved one, be it spouse, child, or pet.

The latest case of broken-case syndrome can only prove that the grief experienced by pet owners can be as devastating as the grief for humans. Past studies have confirmed the hypothesis as pet owners with sick animals tend to experience the so-called “caregiver burden” more often than owners of healthy pets.

The Texas woman said she was not surprised with her diagnosis especially after a year in which her son faced a complicated surgery, her daughter’s family lost the primary source of income, and she was engaged in a complex real estate sale.

Sugar Can Lead to a More Aggressive Cancer

October 22, 2017 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

Vegan cake New research has linked sugar to rapid tumor growth in cancer patients. It is not the first time a study associates a particular food to cancer, processed meats and trans fats have long been believed to fuel cancer.

Scientists at three institutions in Belgium have recently completed a nine-year experiment that revealed that the type of sugar called glucose can boost tumor growth rate. The findings appeared this week in the journal Nature Communications.

The research team explained that non-cancerous cells get their energy from digested food through a process called aerobic respiration. In the process oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is released. Cancerous cells, on the other hand, skip respiration and get their energy from fermented sugar through a long-documented process called the Warburg effect.

During the experiment, researchers tested the Warburg effect theory on yeast cells in laboratory conditions. Yeast cells and cancerous cells are very similar as they would rather get their energy from sugar than respiration. The scope of the experiment was to test the Warburg effect’s strength when it comes to cancer.

Sugar Fuels Cancer

Repeated tests have shown that sugar indeed fuels tumor growth as it can spur the reproduction rate of cells exponentially. The experiment revealed that sugar can boost the reproduction rate of certain genes called Ras proteins which have been long suspected of causing aggressive forms of cancer.

Senior author Johan Thevelein explained that sugar intake can lead to a vicious cycle as cancer cells grow faster and sturdier which prompts more sugar intake. Thevelein thinks his team has just proved that the Warburg effect is tied to tumor aggressiveness.

This link between sugar and cancer has sweeping consequences,

the co-author of the research said.

He is confident the study results could help further research into the matter and more effective cancer treatments. However, the team couldn’t tell why exactly cancerous cells respond so aggressively to sugar.

Trump Drops 92 Spots on Forbes Billionaire List

October 19, 2017 By Dave Smith Leave a Comment

After President Donald Trumps wealth was trimmed by $600 million, he lost 92 spots on Forbes’ annual list of America’s wealthiest people.

The President now holds the 248th position, with an estimated wealth of $3.1 billion. Forbes unveiled this year’s list Tuesday. In 2016, the president held the 156th position with a wealth of $3.7 billion.

Forbes investigators had to sift through heaps of public records like financial disclosure forms and interview dozens of persons familiar with the matter to calculate Trump’s net worth, which has been a controversial issue for years.

Trump once said that his fortune stands at $10 billion, but since he repeatedly refused to release his tax returns it is unclear if his claim holds water. Trump is the first U.S. president not to disclose the financial data since Richard Nixon.

Trump Lost Money Last Year

Forbes has been keeping an eye on the President’s wealth since 1982, which marks the beginning of the list. The magazine thinks that the recent loss of wealth can be attributed to a softening in the retail and real estate markets in New York City. Forbes has found that Trump’s Manhattan properties have lost so much value that they slashed his fortune by $400 million. The most affected properties were those located around Fifth Avenue.

Trump also lost some money after heavily investing in his presidential campaign last year. According to official records, the campaign efforts cost him $66 million. And there was also the Trump university scandal which cost him $25 million in legal fees and compensation.

Experts believe that Trump’s numerous golf courses also hemorrhaged money. Yet, the loses have been partially offset by the revenues brought by Trump’s tower in Las Vegas and an office building in San Francisco.

On this year Forbes list, Microsoft boss Bill Gates holds the first spot, with an $89 million net income, and Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos the second spot, with a net worth of $81 billion.
