If you’re looking for a sure way to lose weight, one of the most popular fall spices might be the key to the process. A recent study has revealed that cinnamon can play a major role in weight loss. The spice contains plenty of organic compounds which interact with fat cells, and some of them appear to ease the process of fat burning.
Cinnamon has a compound which burns fat to get heat
The main ingredient in cinnamon which eases weight loss is cinnamaldehyde, the compound which gives the spice its recognizable flavor. This substance triggers thermogenesis, namely the burning of calories in at attempt to create heat. Therefore, by using this compound to create a mechanism which converts fat into energy, researchers might find an effective way to fight against obesity.
A previous experiment used cinnamaldehyde to combat obesity in mice, as well as reducing their chances to develop high blood sugar. Now, researchers decided to develop a new study where they decoded the mechanism behind this magical compound found in cinnamon.
Cinnamaldehyde proved effective on all body types and BMIs
Therefore, they tested the substance both on human fat cells and on mouse fat cells. Once they got exposed to cinnamaldehyde, the cells expressed genes typical of different metabolic processes. This phenomenon was present across different kinds of body types, sexes, or ethnicities.
Fat storage in the body is an evolutionary response to the lack of high-fat foods that our ancestors could eat. Nowadays, we don’t have to rely only on our body deposits to get energy, so storing too much fat can be problematic. Therefore, knowing that cinnamon has an anti-obesity effect is a major step in the fight against excessive weight.
The study has been published in the journal Metabolism. However, the effect of cinnamon and cinnamaldehyde is not completely understood, so researchers need to continue their studies and find out how the spice should be used to combat obesity.
