An Indian woman lived some terrifying moments when she found an unwanted guest inside her head. Doctors found a cockroach in the woman’s head. They suspected that the insect crawled through her nostril when she was asleep and thus entered her head.
Selvi is a 42-year-old domestic worker. She talked about the horrible hours she had to spend before being able to go search for medical assistance. She described the sensation she was feeling inside her head as tingling and crawling.
When the insect moved, it made her feel like her eyes were on fire. She spent an entire night with the cockroach inside her head before she could go to a doctor referenced to her by her employer.
The doctors initially thought that the peculiar sensations were caused by a skin growth in her nose, so they tried to reference her to other medical specialists. However, after performing an endoscopy, they discovered that the discomfort was caused by a live cockroach inside the woman’s head.
The insect was located on her skull, sitting between her eyes and near the brain. Dr. M. N. Shankar, the head of the ENT department of the Stanley Medical College Hospital, declared that this was the first case when he saw something like that.
Shankar and his colleagues agreed that they had dealt before with maggots or houseflies inside people’s heads, but this was the first case of a cockroach. The insect could have been fatal for the woman if it died inside her. Given the position of the cockroach, its death could have caused the woman to develop an infection which could have easily spread to the brain.
The doctors had the tough mission to drag the cockroach out of the woman’s head. They used different clamps and suckers and they spent 45 minutes to finish the job. The difficult part was to lure the insect to a place from where they could remove it more easily.
A similarly unusual and disturbing situation occurred in 2012 in South Korea, when a woman ate partially boiled squid and one of them was still alive. While chewing, she sensed how the squid stung her tongue. Afterwards, the doctors discovered that her mouth was full of spermatores (squid semen) and 12 creatures were stuck to her cheek, gingiva, and mucous membrane of the tongue.
