Several hospital employees from North Carolina ended up in the emergency room after eating cookies and muffins which were baked with cannabis oil. They did not know what the sweets contained, so they ate them without knowing what effects they might have on their health.
The victims were six workers from the Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. After they started feeling sick, the doctors discovered that the baked goods they had consumed contained cannabis oil. They noticed that the patients experienced the typical psychoactive effects for marijuana, only more intense. If the THC from the cannabis oil is ingested, the effects are much stronger.
The guilty employee faced no legal charges
They discovered that another employee had brought the cookies at work on Sunday, but he was not aware of what they contained. The police in Statesville started some investigations, but the person who had brought the sweets faced no charges.
Another family member had actually baked the food, and left them in the kitchen without telling anyone what they contained. The police department decided not to bring these people to court, since they did not possess any drugs when they were questioned. Thus, they would not have any evidence to bring to court.
Cannabis is still illegal in North Carolina
North Carolina is one of the states where cannabis is illegal both for medical and for recreational use. However, cannabis oil which contains low THC levels can be purchased under certain conditions. The health officials in the state tried to legalize the medical marijuana use in 2014, but this attempt was not successful.
However, cannabis possession in small amounts is no longer considered a criminal offense. If people have less than a half-ounce of marijuana, they are in no risk of ending up in jail.
Despite the incident, the hospital officials declared that they were still able to provide the best medical services to their other patients. They were able to manage the situation quickly and no one was affected.
This is not the first time when people end up with unpleasant symptoms after eating food which contains cannabis oil. These people either do not know what the food contains, or are unaware that the effects of THC are more severe if it is ingested.
