Due to the intricate approach that Europeans have towards facial recognition technology, Facebook’s Moments app will not be available in Europe.
Facebook is about to launch a brand new photo app called Moments, which is aimed to make its users reconnect with memories that they might have forgotten from the last years. The app will search the camera roll of one user for pictures of another user, in order to resurface pictures that would be of interest to both.
The new heartwarming app will use facial recognition so as to identify the face of a user among the pictures of another user, which the two will then be able to share among themselves and have a good time reminiscing over their memories together.
Obviously, the two users who will share the pictures will have to be friends, so that the app is allowed to search the pictures of one user for those featuring another user. Ultimately, it sounds like this cute little app could make a whole lot of people reconnect and therefore it is worth a look.
Europeans will not be able to do this however, as the European Union frowns upon the facial recognition technology, that constitutes the baseline of the Moments app.
Back in 2012, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner has conducted an audit of the services provided by Facebook and it has taken significant issue with the social media platforms’ feature that suggested tag options for pictures. This feature used the same facial recognition technology to identify a user’s friends in his photos, in order to suggest to him which friends to tag in his photos.
But after this audit, it appears that European Union officials have continuously pressured Facebook to remove the tag suggest feature from European Facebook. And they have succeeded in their endeavor, as Facebook has not had this feature since 2012.
This is the main reason why Facebook will not be launching its Moments app in the European Union, especially since their views on this type of technology have not become more permissive in the meantime.
As for the US, the upcoming Moment app will be available on Google Play and App Store soon enough and it is most likely going to make many people rekindle their friendships by providing common memories to make people think about better times.
