May’s full moon is called flower moon
On Wednesday night, the world was able to witness the beautiful full moon for the month of May. In the areas with clear sky, people were able to enjoy the breathtaking view of the flower moon, which shone brilliantly and cast its moonbeams over Earth.
Skygazers get to enjoy full moon views every month. However, the one occurring in May is special, since the weather has already got warmer, and this makes everything more enjoyable. Due to the end of cold weather and the abundance of blooms, the May full moon received the name of flower moon.
Clouds partially obscured this year’s flower moon
At 5:42 p.m. Eastern time, the flower moon was already in full bloom. At this hour, it had not become visible in the United States yet. After sunset, the moon began rising in the east, and it showcased itself at almost 100 percent illumination, offering an impressive show of lights and rays.
Unfortunately, certain states had quite a cloudy night sky, so the moon view was not perfect. Those who went out early to see the show were able to get a full glimpse of the moon. However, the sky got obscured as the night passed, so the magical view got obstructed.
The symbolism behind May’s full moon
The flower moon holds plenty of mythical symbolism. Native Americans call it like that, as it shines over Earth at a perfect time for spiritual exploration. When plants are in bloom, they get healing properties, which are unleashed when the moon is full. Also, this is the perfect time for fertility and breeding.
Besides flower moon, it also received other names: the milk moon, as milkweed start blooming in May; frog moon, as this is when frogs start roaming the Earth; or corn planting moon, as May marks the beginning of the corn planting season. The flower moon is of great importance in many cultures, since it marks the moment when everything returns to life.
