Studies and researches are always controversial. Some scientists have a certain result, others come and say that they found the opposite. Despite the fact that all studies are somehow controversial there is nothing as controversial as gene editing.
You have probably heard about the scientists that grew a mice pancreas inside a rat. You also heard about the researchers that implanted human stem cells inside a pig. These two studies were just the beginning of gene editing.
Despite the fact that many people say that it is not moral to “play God”, editing genes has received the green light. After the Human Gene-Editing Initiative released the official report, this type of research has received approval. This approval comes with caution marks and it is only available for some special cases.
Although this type of technique has been known for quite some time, it was not approved until now. Starting now, this method will be within our reach, once it is tested. One of the known editing tools is known as CRIPSR-Cas9.
The experts that have used this technology have been able to modify animals and plants. The problem is that scientists want to try the same technology only this time involving people. Some people consider this a revolution, a great thing for medicine. They think that this tech, used with caution, can actually help people recover from certain diseases.
On the other hand, many people totally disagree with this type of method. They believe that it is too risky. Of course, there are also the moral and ethical issues of gene editing. This is why many people believe that gene editing might actually do more harm than good.
Despite the fact that it is still a controversial subject the official report states that scientists can use and study gene editing but they have to follow strict rules. Scientists can only use this technique in order to prevent or rectify a genetic disorder.
This type of technique can be used only as a last resort. Gene editing can only be used to prevent diseases from being transmitted down a person’s genetic line. Another important rule is that this method can’t be used for non-medical reasons.
At the moment, there is no therapy available that uses gene editing. Technologies exist but they are at an incipient stage. Researchers need to study this method and to improve it in order to show that gene editing is not as bad as most people think it is.
