Following other questionable fashion statements such as flower beards and glitter roots, now glitter beards are the latest fad of the holiday season, and they are gaining more and more popularity lately.
Hipster beards have become excessively common this year, and now some unconventional men are taking this one step further. They have been adorning their prized chin hair with sparkles, probably in celebration of No-Shave November, or in anticipation of Christmas.
In fact, upon searching for #glitterbeard on Instagram, one can find almost 4,000 posts showing users showing off their glittery whiskers.
Some of them have surely been feeling overly festive lately, because they have even been decorating their beards like they would embellish a Christmas tree, using colorful tinsel, ball ornaments, angels, bells, snowflakes, candy canes and ribbons.
Even last year there was a similar fad (minus the glitter), which had been spurred by creatives at Grey London advertising agency, who developed beard baubles, meant to turn bushy beards into Christmas centerpieces.
The clip-on adornments, which looked like miniature tree decorations, could easily be attached to facial hair, and demand for them turned out to be so high at the time that the items soon became out of stock.
While those prior beard-decorating efforts had been driven and marketed by an actual company, it’s not exactly certain how this more recent guilty pleasure has begun.
It may be that some hirsute men simply decided one day that they should apply glitter on their moustache and beards, with some of them even covering their eyebrows in shimmering metalic particles.
Soon after, even a YouTube tutorial appeared, in which Brian Delaurenti and Johnathan Dahl, known as the Gay Beards, explained how the festive look could be achieved.
In their instructional video, they recommend trimming the beard properly in advance, to achieve the desired shape.
Afterwards, it’s ideal to apply beard oil, hairspray or at least some water in advance, so that glitter can remain glued for longer amounts of time. Then, the contents of a glitter bottle can simply be poured onto the beard, covering it as intended.
The Portland, Oregon-based best friends also warn that while the gleaming specks can be removed from the beard after applying shampoo and showering, they may stick on the wearer’s body and clothes, as well as all over the house.
While it may initially seem that glittery beards are embraced by all of those who have posted photos, in fact just a portion of them are earnest in their appreciation of this recent Internet hair craze.
Others are definitely not on board, and are simply trying to mock this look, even discouraging people from ever adopting it.
It remains to be seen how much the fad will grow in the following weeks, given that Christmas is fast approaching, and many more men might be tempted to get their beards into the holiday spirit.
