Google’s self driving cars have been the topic of many debates, especially since they have been involved in a few accidents that made them not so reliable in the eyes of all those customers who were dying to put their hands on them.
The report released on Friday, the 5th of June, stated that the accidents were considered minor and nobody was injured during the crashes. Nevertheless, these might have represented a huge setback for the company producing them, possibly affecting their sales.
Therefore, committed to customer care as it has always been, the company has recently issued more details regarding the 12 accidents in which its self-driving vehicles were implicated. The company had made a commitment to release monthly reports in which information about the cars’ performance would be disclosed.
This came after Consumer Watchdog made pressure on the company to release the detailed reports of the accidents filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
The group had been a long time critic of Google, so they immediately jumped at the opportunity to shed a bad light on the California-based company, renewing its calls to have the reports of the accidents released.
The Mountain View company said that the technology was not faulty, so it was not to blame for any of the crashes the self-driving cars have been involved in, except for one, in which one of Google’s employees took the car to run an errand. He accidentally crashed the vehicle into another one that was stopped.
A report for that particular accident, which occurred in August 2011 was issued by the company.
The cars have been available since 2009 and the first accident was recorded a year later, in May 2010. Half of the accidents occurred while the cars were in autonomous driving mode. The other half happened while employees were driving the vehicles.
This year, four accidents involving Google’s self-driving cars have been reported. In most cases the vehicles were crashed into by other drivers, according to the company’s reports.
“We’ve made a lot of progress with our self-driving technology over the past six years, and we’re still learning. Every day we head out onto public streets so we can keep challenging and refining our software,” stated the report.
However, the company is not about to give in to criticism, as they are planning to test a new type of self-driving car this summer. The tests will be carried out in the company’s hometown, where most of the accidents took place.
