Google Trends has been useful for journalists who wanted to find out the preferences of the audience in the recent past. With the new update Google Trends will no longer display what people’s interests were in the past, but it will show real-time information.
The new design respects Google’s Material Design guidelines which is a design language introduced by the company almost a year ago and which is now applied on both web and mobile devices. For now the homepage is available in 28 countries, but the company has announced that in the next couple of months more locations will be added.
Google Trends’ real-time ability enables users in every minute to explore real-time data about more than 100 searches which are made on Google every month. For example during the NBA Finals or the Oscars you can be able to check the stories which are most searched by people and see in which part of the world the interest is peaking. You can explore the information if you select an image at any time range.
Users will also have access to a real-time rank of trending stories which are obtaining traction across Google. And there is more to it: you can even check trends from Google News and YouTube. According to the company Google Trends’ update is a response to the feedback received from journalists, marketers and other people around the world. Those who are interested in trending stories can now download datasets containing information about key trends for their own visualizations and analyses.
The tech giant said in a blog post:
“To help you understand the data behind the headlines, our News Lab team examines trending topics every day and finds interesting nuggets of data that bring news stories to life. You can follow us on Twitter to stay up to date. “
Google also specified that data journalists who plan to make their own analysis can access the company’s Github page, where they have datasets on particular topics. For researchers and journalists having insight into what people want to know in real-time is very important information.
According to Google there are already a series of news companies which are using the information acquired by the company for their reporting duties. This move represents the biggest expansion which Google Trends has experienced ever since 2012.
