Grizzly bears are rare to find in Washington these days. Despite the fact that once there were a lot of grizzlies, now it’s a rare thing to spot a grizzly in Washington. This is why the federal officials made plans to restore the grizzly population in the state.
The federal officials made a plan that includes more options that could restore the grizzly bears there. One of the options is to capture grizzlies from another area and then get them to the North Cascades National Park.
Three of the four options want to restore the bears by getting the animals in that area and letting them breed. The difference between these 3 options is the number of years that are necessary for 200 bears to populate Washington. One option states that the necessary time is 25 years while the other two say that there is a need for at least 60 years for that to happen.
Although there is a fourth option that includes taking no action, federal officials believe that they need to restore the population of grizzly bears in this area. The US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service haven’t picked any alternative. They are thinking about what they could do to restore the animals naturally.
This is not the first time this problem was up for debate. There was another attempt to restore these animals in 2015. Although a draft was written then too, nothing happened. People who support the grizzly bears believe that these animals should come back to Washington. They also mentioned that there is no chance for this to happen naturally. This is why grizzly bears need some help in order for their population to be restored in Washington.
“Returning this magnificent animal to the North Cascades is a rare opportunity to restore our natural heritage,” said Joe Scott of the nonprofit Conservation Northwest
Of course, there are a lot of people that believe these animals should not be restored in this state. They fear that the livestock could be affected. Also, they mentioned that these animals could be dangerous for farmers and other people who might come across them.
What is your opinion about restoring the grizzly bears? Do you believe that it is a good decision?
