After the catastrophic outcomes of his recent gaming projects, Guillermo del Toro says he will never get involved in gaming projects ever again, because he feels that there is an unspoken power preventing him from successfully completing a project in this field.
“I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I (…) will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something,” said the talented Guillermo del Toro himself.
The Mexican film genius has received worldwide acclaim for his work as a director, writer and producer. He has brought to life genre classics such as “Pan’s Labyrinth” or “The Devil’s Backbone” and he has proven his tremendous versatility in cinematography by working as an actor and by making essential contributions to numerous projects as in the editing department, the art department and even in the stunts department.
Del Toro’s career proves the level of his mastery in cinematography, and it was precisely his desire to go deeper and deeper into the visual arts world that led him to get involved in gaming projects. As one of the greatest masters of the horror genre in the international cinematography community, it seemed to be a perfect fit that Del Toro would work on horror computer games.
And millions of gaming enthusiasts from all over the world were excited to see what he could bring to the world of gaming, considering he has brought to life some of the scariest movies in film history. Guillermo del Toro is remarkable in creating a haunting scenery in his movies, that is able to get under the viewer’s skin and transport him in the middle of the action, right there alongside the main character.
This was the main reason why his games could have gone beyond the boundaries of his films, in the sense that the players could have started to view the world precisely through the eyes of the main character of the game this time.
However, neither InSane or Silent Hills ever made it to the fans, for a wide range of complex reasons that actually have nothing to do with del Toro personally. Due to a series of unfortunate events, del Toro’s games never actually materialized, in spite his great effort and enthusiastic involvement and the immense support of the fans.
Master del Toro says that he will not get involved in gaming projects ever again, but maybe for the right project, sometime in the next few years he might be swayed to participate, because it seems like a great loss to the media world that such a visionary artist be prevented form expressing his amazing ideas, due to pure bad luck.
Until then, Guillermo del Toro is as involved as ever in the world of cinema. His upcoming film, “Crimson Peek” will be released this fall and it is bound to be a visual experience worthy of remembrance. Aside from this major project, del Toro is working on several others, such as the third installment of the “The Ring” series, one of the most successful remakes of a foreign series, that fans have been expecting for almost a decade.
