A Photoshop experiment involving designers from 18 different countries was conducted in order to emphasize how the ideal woman would look like according to their culture’s perceptions of beauty and the ideal female body form.
The Perceptions of Perfection Across Borders website wanted to make the study involving a simple question, that of how perceptions of beauty vary worldwide.
Female graphic designers across the globe were asked to create in Photoshop, the famous retouching and photo-manipulation software, a female form, creating a stereotype that would match other citizens’ standards of beauty from their country.
The team who thought of the project said that the goal was to observe how unrealistic standards of beauty were encompassed worldwide and how they would deviate from expectations regarding each country.
The final outcomes were quite surprising, ranging from the skinny Miss China, to the voluptuous Miss Italy, and the refined Miss USA. It seems Miss Spain, among a few others, wouldn’t develop a complex because of being a little overweight.
The team of designers manipulated the photo to an extent that it seemed truly unrecognizable in comparison to the original one. Even though some remained a bit similar to the un-Photoshopped image, just via minor adjustment such as slimming, others were submitted to drastic changes in resembling a totally different woman altogether. These alterations involved changes in hair color, attire and waist circumference, for instance.
Designers in Northern, Southern and Central American countries made up an hourglass-inspired figure, whereas some from Asian and European countries developed very thin models, with a body mass index close to 17.5. To be noted, a weight below 17.5 BMI means one might suffer from anorexia, according to the National Health Service.
Moreover, according to a brief survey that estimated what these women might actually weigh in real life, Italy and China would weigh 108 lbs (49 kg) and 102 lbs (46.3 kg) respectively, the latter translating into a BMI of 17, which qualifies as anorexic. Spain displayed a slightly heavy submission, with 153 lbs/69.4 kg. Thus, it seems some Spaniards don’t mind some pretty round shapes involving a woman.
But, nevertheless, a valid statement that should finally be pointed out is that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.
