How to clean your comforter properly to keep it until next winter

There are several types of fillings, although the most common are those with synthetic fiber and those filled with feathers. And, depending on this, there are different ways to wash it.

The change of season has arrived and with it a Herculean but necessary task: changing the comforter and also washing it. In general, if it has been protected by a cover, it is best to wash it every six months, although if it is only a quilt it is better to wash it every two or three months because it also harbors bacteria or body fluids. The first thing to do when washing the quilt is to check the washing label to know what you can and cannot do.

There are several types of fillings, although the most common are those with synthetic fiber and those filled with feathers. And depending on one or the other is different the way to wash it, although there are some recommendations that work for both:

  • Do not use fabric softener
  • Do not overdo it with detergent
  • Apply a stain treatment
  • Check that there are no filling leaks

If it has been protected by a cover, it is best to wash it every six months, although if it is only a quilt, it is better to wash it every two or three months.

But beyond that, it is a good idea to choose one temperature program or another depending on the material of the comforter, as for synthetic fabrics cold water is recommended and those made of cotton are better suited to a cycle at 60ºC, to give some examples.

Washing a synthetic fiber comforter

  1. Put it in the washing machine.
  2. Pour detergent for delicate clothes and do not use fabric softener, as mentioned before.
  3. Choose a short wash cycle at 60ºC.
  4. To dry it, shake it well and spread it out quickly in the open air (better if it is sunny).

Washing a comforter with natural feathers

  1. Put the comforter in the washing machine.
  2. To prevent the feathers from clumping, insert 3 or 4 tennis balls wrapped in socks, which will help distribute the feathers evenly.
  3. Select a program for delicate garments, in cold water and a special detergent for delicate clothes. Again, avoid using fabric softeners.
  4. Dry it horizontally and turn it inside out.

If it is made of feathers, air it every morning to remove the moisture it has absorbed during the night, turn it inside out and shake it twice a week, as it needs a lot of ventilation.

You can also maintain it with some that will be very useful. If it is made of feathers, air it every morning to eliminate the humidity it has absorbed during the night, turn it inside out and shake it twice a week, as it needs a lot of ventilation. If it is synthetic fiber, you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust mites.

Last but not least: before storing them until the next season, make sure they are completely dry. Fold them in their cover or plastic bag and place them in a dry place to avoid humidity and, consequently, bad moods. See you next season!
