IKEA issues safety warning for its drawers after two US children have died in furniture tipping accidents last year.
Securing furniture in the house is one of the most important aspects of childproofing a home. Multi-drawer chests are the furniture pieces that require the best possible securing, because they are the easiest to put out of balance. It only takes putting heavier things in the top drawers than the lower ones and the entire chest tips over, putting whoever and whatever is in its way in danger.
This is what happened in two separate incidents that took place last year and that have led to the death of two small children. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that in the first accident, a young boy of two from West Chester, Pennsylvania lost his life when an IKEA MALM chest with six drawers tipped over and trapped him between the drawer and a bed.
The second accident occurred in Snohomish, Washington and claimed the life a a 23-month-old. A MALM chest with three drawers fell on him and trapped him.
“The chests and dressers can pose a tip-over hazard if not securely anchored to the wall.” pointed out a CPSC representative.
IKEA currently offers the free installation of the securing devices that can keep furniture firmly attached to walls, so that it does not endanger those who use it. While furniture tipping is a safety hazard for people of all ages, as large furniture pieces hurt adults as well, they are particularly dangerous to children.
Therefore, the CPSC has issued some guidelines for proper furniture that points out that the maximum height of the dressers used for children’s rooms should be of 23.5 inches, the equivalent of 60 centimeters and of the dressers in adult rooms should be 29.5 inches or 75 centimeters.
“IKEA already provides tip-over restraints and instructions with all floor standing units that are purchased which are required to be fastened to the wall.” explained an IKEA representative.
Therefore, special precautions for securing furniture to the walls could keep people safe on the long run and that is why it is extremely important that this part of the furniture installation process is not overlooked.
