The Brits voted for Brexit. Now, what? Apparently, the new immigration policy for the UK will have to come to terms with the EU, one way or another. Here is a forecast.
One of the most important requests from Brexit voters was to make the UK’s immigration policy safe again. Theresa May made that promise, but has not shown what she’s going to do with all the control she will have over the borders.
Many would like a very restrictive system. However, analysts see this as a big mistake. Most economists would agree that the UK’s interest would be best served by a liberal system.
The Conservative Party, which is now in command, has promised to bring a decline in migration, by “tens of thousands.”
Too little immigration and the UK economy could suffer. Too much of it, and the same thing could happen.
A novel immigration philosophy would mean that low-cost access is offered to skilled workers in IT and other specialties which the UK’s economy depends on.
Another point would be to grant free entry to the EU citizens who are already in the United Kingdom.
Lastly, the United Kingdom should have an instrument to end the pressure on the country’s public services.
Last year, net migration towards the United Kingdom was at 327,000 people, preceding March 2016. 180,000 from the total were EU citizens. The large numbers show how much the UK’s labor market can absorb.
It is true that many want to reduce those figures, but they have to do it correctly. Prime Minister Theresa May has decided not to apply an Australian-style system, based on points.
Currently, the UK has a points system in place for migrants from outside the European Union. But even that system has little control over total numbers.
So the solution could be a system based on permits, combined with points and overall caps.
There is also a political side to the debate. People will be disappointed if nothing changes and overall numbers of immigrants remain. But the growing UK economy can’t do without a fresh influx of workers.
