Pets sometimes are our best friends. It is the same case with kids. A new study focused on the relationship kids develop with their pets. The study showed that children tend to be closer to their pets than to their siblings.
A group of researchers from the University of Cambridge researched the way kids feel when they play with their pets. They were able to find out that children feel more satisfied when they are around their companions.
The findings showed that children can benefit from having a pet. The researchers found that the social skills of children can develop faster if they own a pet. The emotional health of kids is also influenced by their furry companion.
The researchers analyzed kids from more than 70 families. All of the families had at least one animal and more than one child. The participants were 12-year-olds kids. The participants mentioned that usually, they have a better relationship with their pets than with their siblings.
Of course, the findings can be limited because children at that age then to fight with their brothers and sisters. Previous studies showed that boys were the ones that developed a stronger relationship with their pets. This recent study showed exactly the opposite. In this study, the girls were the ones that mentioned feeling better around their companions.
The children compared the relationship they have with their pets and the one they have with their brothers or sisters. The kids said that they have a higher satisfaction when playing with their dog for instance than when they are around their siblings.
“Pets are common but their importance to children and early adolescents has received scant empirical attention. This is partly due to a lack of tools for measuring child-pet relationships,” the study noted.
This study shows once again that animals have a great influence on our development when we are young. They help us develop socially and emotionally. Despite the fact that they don’t speak, previous studies showed that animals can understand what we are saying and they are empathic. They are the ones that can comfort us when we have problems.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that pets have a great influence on our development?
