On Wednesday scientists have finally found out the length of the day of the gas planet Saturn, It comes out to be 10 hours, 32 minutes and 45 seconds long.
Saturn is the sixth furthest planet from our sun.
Scientist couldn’t identify Saturn’s rotation period. It has no sold object on its surface which makes it difficult to observe the speed at which it spins.
NASA’s voyager spacecraft has used radio measurement to calculate the rotation of Saturn and it came as 10 hours 39 minutes and 22.4 seconds.
Cassini space traveler has also measured the rotation time of Saturn and it has come as 10 hours 4 minutes and 6 seconds.
Scientists couldn’t calculate the exact rotation time of Saturn.
The latest calculation is based on using the Saturn’s gravitational field, and adjusts for planets shape and density.
To confirm their findings, scientist have used the same method to calculate Jupiter’s rotational whose speed is already determined
Ravit Helled of Israel’s Tel Aviv University, study co-arthur said, “An accurate determination of Saturn’s rotation period has important implications for understanding its atmospheric dynamics and internal structure.”
He further added that the internal structures knowledge will provide important information on the formation process of the gas planets.
The new method also suggested that the Saturn’s core was smaller than previously estimated.
This new method may be used calculate the rotation periods of other planets in future.
