A Lexington plastic surgeon is currently under scrutiny for allegedly showing up drunk at the hospital. The doctor, who was scheduled to perform an operation that day, was barred from practice and was placed under arrest. Authorities and hospital board are investigating the incident.
Lexington Plastic Surgeon Is a Graduate of West Point Military Academy
Dr. Theodore Gerstle was arrested on Monday morning after the hospital’s staff discovered that the surgeon attempt to enter the OR in an advanced state of intoxication. According to Ruth Ann Childers, the spokesperson of the Baptist Health Lexington Hospital, the plastic surgeon was scheduled for surgery on Monday at noon.
Soon after arriving at the hospital, the staff discovered that there was something wrong with Dr. Gerstle and immediately notified the Chief Surgeon. Upon confrontation, the Lexington plastic surgeon admitted he was tipsy and was evacuated from the premises by the Chief Surgeon.
The hospital board called the authorities and declared that one of their surgeons attempted to enter surgery in an advanced state of drunkenness. The individual was arrested later that day and detained at the Fayette County Jail.
Investigations revealed that Gerstle is not a full-time employee at the Baptist Health Lexington, but the hospital maintains a collaboration since he is the only Harvard-trained plastic surgeon in town. Moreover, it would seem that the Lexington plastic surgeon got his degree in surgery from the West Point Military Academy.
Childers declared that for the duration of Gerstle’s investigation, his hospital privileges would be revoked.
At the moment it’s still unclear why Gerstle decided to hit the bottle minutes before entering the operating room or what type of surgery was he scheduled to perform that day. Furthermore, the Lexington plastic surgeon did not appoint an attorney for the upcoming trial.
