A recent study took the world of chocolate goodies by storm when it announced that a certain ingredient found in Nutella may cause cancer. Ferrero, the Italian company that manufactures Nutella and many popular sweets, is now leading an intense campaign to state the contrary.
The study came out in early December and stated to have found a link between palm oil, one of the main Nutella ingredients, and an aggressive spread of cancer in mice. As soon as this was made public, a great number of Italian supermarket chains announced they would stop selling the product.
The European Food Standards Authority had already announced since May that the edible form of palm oil poses a risk of developing cancer, but the news brought by the study created turmoil in the United States. Nutella was facing an increasing popularity and it had a declared fan base all around the world. The alarming news made them hysterical.
Also, Ferrero is currently running an active advertising campaign trying to convince people that Nutella is actually safe. In an interview given to Reuters, they discussed the use of palm oil in their recipes. Palm oil is the second most important ingredient in Nutella, being responsible for the texture and spreadability.
They declared that the quality of Nutella would decrease greatly if palm oil was withdrawn from the recipe. The product of a palm oil free Nutella recipe would be a cheaper replacement of a much lower quality.
Vincenzo Tapella, the purchasing manager at Ferrero, declared that they were not taking into consideration to give up palm oil from their recipes. Moreover, their sale rates have only increased in the past decades, bringing them earnings worth more than $2 billion.
Palm oil is also the cheapest of all the vegetable oils. This makes it profitable to use and explains the presence of palm oil in thousands of processes foods, as stated by the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism.
Nutella fans have gathered in defense of the manufacturing company. They are not willing to accept an inferior substitute either and have declared themselves not scared of the possible health risks the beloved product brings on the table. They are diehard fans and stated that, whatever happens, it will be “worth it”.
