A man has been arrested for having taped his dog’s mouth shut using electrical tape. Fortunately, the animal managed to escape his chains and was seen walking around the neighborhood with its muzzle taped shut, because it has been taken to an animal protection facility, where it has received immediate medical attention.
William Leonard Dobson, a 41-year old man had bought the dog for $20, according to a legal document regarding the purchase. The reason why he decided to put electrical tape around his dog’s mouth apparently was the fact that he had become tired of the dog’s barking.
He actually called the woman who had sold him the dog to laughingly tell her what he had done. Thus, the woman’s testimony made it obvious that Dobson had no remorse for his act of cruelty.
The dog is a Staffordshire terrier mix, named Caitlyn, and it is only 15 months old. She is now undergoing treatment at a veterinary clinic, as there was extensive damage to her tongue and muzzle. The tape was applied so tightly that has cut blood flow to these parts for quite a long period of time.
The veterinary doctors who are conducting its treatment have said that its condition is still critical, but that Caitlyn has shown important progress so far.
As for the man who did this to her, he has been arrested with the help of the woman who had sold him the dog, who has identified him to the police from a list of suspects. He has been charged with ill treatment of animals and animal cruelty.
His bail has been set at $50,ooo, but it remains unclear whether or not Dobson has any kind of legal representation at the moment. He will definitely be in need of a lawyer, as he is facing significant jail time for his actions.
This matter has raised massive awareness regarding the animal welfare laws in America, that most of the time prove to be incoherent to the extent of the cruelty that animals are subjected to. Caitlyn’s case has had somewhat of a happy ending, but the underlying situation still awaits resolving.
The punitive measures that are administered for animal cruelty have yet to be fully in line with the gravity of the acts performed. And this has serious repercussions on people’s safety, as ever-so-often animal offenders progress to human victims, if their cases are not properly dealt with.
Dobson’s trial and sentencing is awaited by many, as this case has made a lot of noise in the media and has the potential of becoming an empowering for the prevail of justice for animals or a dangerously helpful precedent for animal rights offenders.
