Researchers from the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University say that marijuana could be used to heal bone fractures.
The importance of marijuana for medical use as alleviating therapy has been known for a long time. Marijuana can be used to treat diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. However, starting with the 1930s, the therapeutic use of the drug was banned in most countries because of problems related to addiction.
It seems that a certain compound contained in marijuana can help healing bone fractures. This makes scientists believe that in the future marijuana could be used to treat osteoporosis and other similar diseases. It seems that the non-psychotropic component cannabinoid cannabidiol or CBD plays an important role in healing bone fractures.
The research was conducted the research on rats that had mid-femoral fractures. The scientists observed that CBD accelerated the healing process of the femora even when it was isolated from the most important psychoactive component of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.
The lead author of the study Dr. Yankel Gabet from Hebrew University explained that CBD accelerates the maturation of the collagenous matrix and this forms the basis for the new mineralization of the bone tissue.
The experiment was conducted on rats. Researchers injected one group of animals with CBD alone and the other group with CBD combined with THC. After analyzing the results the research team observed that CBD alone could provide the therapeutic stimulus which was necessary. Dr. Gabet remarked:
“We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing. Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”
According to him the clinical potential of such cannabinoid-related compounds cannot be denied. Even though a lot of works need to be done until the final therapies will be developed it is certain that the psychoactivity of cannabis can be used for clinical purposes, Dr. Gabet added.
Moreover, besides the fact that marijuana could be used to heal bone fractures, after healing the bone will be even stronger than before. More details about the research can be found in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
