The 25th of May marks this year’s celebration of Memorial Day. It celebrates the heroes who gave their life while serving in the U.S. armed forces It has been celebrated for over a century now and it is a time for us to remember the brave people of the country who fought for the well-being of the nation.
While the holiday has a patriotic meaning, for many people it is also a great opportunity to enjoy an extended weekend while taking advantage of warm weather and having barbeques.
However, barbeques should be carefully prepared to avoid food poisoning, which is so popular in the hot season. Statistics released by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention show that every year more than 48 million Americans get food poisoning.
Thus, you should make sure the meat is well cooked and that you consume it if the temperature is above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, to avoid bacteria from growing. When stored, meat should be placed in an environment colder than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, try to avoid eating too much on this occasion, even if there is a lot of food available. Nutritionists recommend we eat our meat with a side of steamed vegetables or salad and we stay away from potato chips and creamy cakes, no matter how tempting they are.
A big meal can easily provide an intake of more than 2000 calories. Remember that only 7000 calories are necessary to produce a kilo of fat deposited on your body. An hour of cycling only helps you burn around 500 calories. You do the math.
Thus, it is preferable to think less about food and take advantage of the weather to do some physical activity. You can go roller-skating in the park, swimming at the pool, play tennis or volleyball with your friends or family.
If you decide to spend Memorial Day weekend outdoors, remember to keep an eye on the insects. May is the month when ticks’ bites are most frequent. Lyme disease is not easy to deal with, so you should make sure both you and your children wear clothes that cover your whole body and use an insect repellent. This can also give you some protection against mosquitoes, whose population is currently growing.
If you decide to spend a long time lying in the sun, think about the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation that may have very damaging effects on your skin. These might vary – from premature skin ageing to skin melanoma, which is extremely painful and dangerous.
Wear tons of sun lotion, a hat and sunglasses and make sure you avoid direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun tends to burn more.
If you decided to take a trip or visit relatives that live far from your home, be careful while driving. Do not exceed the speed limit and do not drive if you’ve drunk alcohol. Accidents are more frequent during holidays like these ones. You want to avoid that and you probably wouldn’t like to get a ticket for not being careful enough.
Otherwise, enjoy the free days, don’t forget to spend quality time with the dear ones and also think about the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country and implicitly for us.
