The story of the model who had to have her leg amputated after developing toxic shock syndrome is quite well-known. After recovering from the surgery and returning to modeling, the woman thought the trouble was finally over. However, doctors have informed her they might have to amputate her other leg as well.
The model developed toxic shock syndrome after keeping a tampon in for too long
Lauren Wasser, aged 29, developed toxic shock syndrome after she used a tampon for a long period of time. This happened in 2012, and started with several flu-like symptoms. Then, she suffered a heart attack, and had to spend some time on life support. However, this condition had some severe effects on her body.
Both her legs got affected by gangrene, so doctors decided an amputation was necessary. They thought they could at least save one of the legs, so they only amputated the right one from below the knee. However, they still had to remove the toes of the left one. Back then, they recommended the amputation of both legs, but Wasser wanted to do anything possible to save at least one of them.
Wasser is now raising awareness on the dangers of tampon use
Soon after the surgery was over, Wasser decided to start a lot of campaigns and raise awareness on the risks of toxic shock syndrome. These campaigns were also meant to inform women on the proper use of tampons, and the risks that are associated with them.
Although Wasser looks like she has recovered and is incredibly proud of her golden fake leg, the remaining one causes her extreme pain. Regardless how much she is struggling to save it, it has no heel and no toes. Also, it still contains an open wound, and fragments of bone keep growing on it.
She underwent several surgeries to remove those bones, but this isn’t a permanent solution. The woman is afraid that she will soon have to have the left leg amputated as well. However, she is grateful that she managed to survive toxic shock syndrome, and finds herself among the lucky ones.
