Fitbit trackers are incredibly popular simply because the corresponding apps on Android and iOS are so easy to use. The app allows you to check on your daily and past activity data, to set challenges and to check how your friend are doing. However, Fitbit decided not to stop here. At CES 2017, they announced that new features are now available for the mobile app. The features include personalized goals and an emphasis on the social aspect.
One of the main new features is Personal Goal. While the app lets you set a daily goal, this new feature allows you to broaden a goal. For example, if you want to maintain your weight, lose some weight or work out five days a week, the app personalizes your recommendations for the achievement of the goal. Moreover, after setting your Personal Goal, the app asks you if you want to set other secondary goals that may help you in achieving the big one.
Another update has a Fitstar integration. Fitbit bought Fitstar a few years ago, but the two apps are separate. Although, now you can synchronize the two apps and Fitstar will recommend workout programs based on your activity recorded on Fitbit. For example, if you are interested in a leg workout but you recorded a several-mile run on Fitbit a few days ago, Fitstar will recommend an upper body workout so that you can relax your lower body. However, since the main apps are separate, you will have to download Fitstar too for the integration to work.
The biggest new feature is the Community Section. Previously, you could browse your friends’ activity in the Friends tab. It still exists, but in the Community tab you can experience a Facebook-like feed with your friends’ activity, groups you can join, and daily updates from Fitbit. The groups are new too and they help you get in touch with people with similar interests, who do the same workouts or who are in the same area as you. The Community tab is a small social network where you can even chat with other fit people. They even have their own version of like button, called “cheer”.
Fitbit’s new feature Personal Goal will be available by the end of this month and the Community tab feature will appear in March 2017.
