The increasing popularity of medical marijuana shops might make us think that their stigma should have been risen by now, but the Florida authorities betrayed our expectations and banned the centers that provide supplies. Now, these centers, such as Surterra Welness in Tampa, are trying to “normalize” medical marijuana use.
Spokeswoman Monica Russell of Surterra Wellness stated that their goal was to make people comfortable about coming in their establishment and not feel guilty for doing so. Visitors are not regular at Surterra dispensary, but they have their accustomed patients. Sometimes other people drop by and require information of what they need to qualify for medical marijuana use.
The dispensary, supervised by a certified nurse, offers so far three types of products. The sprays are tinctures are used orally. The lotion is to be rubbed on and is for spot-treat pain. In the near future, the store will also provide vaporizers, which are to be used as electronic cigarettes.
The THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in the products comes also in three levels. The lowest strength is found in the ‘calm’ varieties, the ‘soothe’ is somewhere in the middle, and the ‘relief’ is the strongest, meant for the treatment of cancer patients. THC is the marijuana component well known for producing states of euphoria. Their most popular product so far has been the calming oil tincture, but the vaporizers are expected to steal the spotlight.
Despite the increasing popularity of medical marijuana, its actual medical benefits are a bit controversial. A study of the American Medical Association found the pain relief in marijuana treatment to be only of a moderate quality. Results were even more disappointing regarding nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, weight gain in HIV patients and sleep disorders. These results were of a low quality.
Still, there are people who found themselves happy with the results. Lolley, faithful customers of Surterra center, declared that low-THC drops helped her epileptic son. He would suffer seizures once every other week but he has not had one in two months since he started using cannabis treatment.
The industry is growing and more patients are going through with the formalities needed in order to get medical marijuana. Only two kinds of patients had access to medical marijuana: those with certain medical conditions (chronic seizures) benefited from non-euphoric strains and those with terminal illnesses benefited from full-strength strains. A constitutional amendment passed in November now broadened the numbers of eligible patients to those suffering from cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder.
