While people all around the world have always been in awe with the incredibly romantic love locks on the Pont des Arts from Paris, which are a simple of everlasting love, it seems that Parisians have never actually shared their feelings. Actually this is an understatement, since the Mayor of Paris has just announced that they would remove all the padlocks from the famous bridge over the river Seine, starting this Monday.
Therefore, it is the last weekend ever when the famous “love locks” can be admired in Paris, because there are no plans of ever bringing them back. It seems that Parisians have actually always considered them an eyesore, as they never thought that they represent a symbol in line with French values of architecture or pretty much anything else.
It is rather disappointing that such a beautiful symbol, revered by lovers from all over the world , was actually something that the Parisians have been despising all along. For them, it has never been more than one of the annoying things that tourists do when they come to Paris.
Actually, they’ve made that pretty clear in a Facebook post made by the association “No Love Locks” after the decision of taking down the padlocks was made official.
“SAY GOODBYE TO LOVE LOCKS ON THE PONT DES ARTS! Sorry, tourists, no more vandalizing our city. Finally, Paris is taking a definitive stand against “love locks.”(…)” said the tactless post.
This cannot be viewed as anything but offensive by all the people who have Paris engraved in their memories, after put their very own padlock on the Pont des Arts and throwing away the key in the Saine river, as they swore eternal love to their significant other.
There is however a serious reason behind the Parisian authorities’ decision to take down the love locks. It seems that all the people’s love was weighing too much on the Parisian bridge, 45 tons to be exact and eventually it became a safety hazard. Actually, a part of the bridge has recently collapsed under the immense weight of the locks.
The authorities have mandated that the love locks, all one million of them, be taken down starting Monday. This will render the Pont des Arts unusable for the first week of June. The famous locks will be replaced with a temporary solution for the summer, in the form of various art pieces from artists all over the world.
Then, in October, plexiglass panels will be added to the love bridge, as well as to the Pont de l’Archevêché, another bridge on the Seine river, so as to convey a better view of the surrounding monuments.
The most disappointing thing regarding this love lock matter remains the Parisians’ attitude towards the entire concept, that is actually worse than their disappearance.
This could be a great chance for other major European cities who have love-lock bridges of their own, like Vienna or Prague. After the rude dismissal of the Parisian love locks, everybody will be happy to get a welcoming alternative. So dear tourists, take your love to Vienna and Prague, because Paris does not appreciate it!
