The drug which was accused of causing birth defects is Pfizer’s Zoloft antidepressant; it is one the US most popular mood altering drug.
Zoloft is the drug which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). From group of antidepressant drug Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) Zoloft is one of the them and it is widely prescribed.
The drug is used by pregnant women who are experiencing depression.
The report of the first U.S. trial on the drug showed that the drug is not causing birth defects in children born from women who have taken the drug during pregnancy.
Kristyn Pesante believed that the drug is responsible for her child’s health condition and had claimed that the company purposefully didn’t reveal the side effects of the drug in order to get higher sales.
The trail was conducted in St. Louis, Missouri and the conclusion was revealed after a week.
Pesante was not just only asking for compensation but she was also asking for disciplinary action to be taken against the company.
It is not only Pesante in the line but there are many other lawsuits against the pharma giant because the drug has caused birth defects in children born from women who took the drug during pregnancy. one defect seen was cardiac among other birth defects.
The trial which was held last Friday was the most important trail as it was the first case selected and also it represented the sufferings of mothers.
Pfizer presented other similar medical evidences and theories and the company was neglecting other cases which aroused across the nation.
In 2012, the issue was first taken to the court; Pesanta said that she has taken the drug during her first trimester as Pfizer claimed that Zoloft is the best treatment for pregnant women who are experiencing depression and the risk of side effects from this drug is least among all the other drugs which are used for the same purpose.
She said she was not aware of the risk at that time.
