Soon, Pinterest users will be able to search for pins without using words. They have already launched the beta version of the new visual discovery tools.
More precisely, users will now be able to take photos of different objects and then find pins that include those objects, places where they can buy them online, or even recipes, if the users snap photos of food.
These features use an artificial intelligence technique that allows for the recognition of the objects in photos and the identifying of their features, for example color. Lens is the first feature that uses the camera of a smartphone to search for similar pins.
Pinterest explain that, if a user snaps a photo of a dining room table for example, the app will return pins of tables with similar designs, or even other furniture that has a style similar to your table.
At the moment, Lens works with apparel, home décor, and food, but if users keep using the beta version, the developers will be able to enhance Lens. Users can use this new feature to search for pins that contain something hard to describe using words, if they want to look up a specific style that they cannot put into words.
When using Lens, you can also start from a basic idea, take a photo, and see where the app takes you. Pinterest is always meant to surprise you and bring to you unexpected discoveries. If you are open-minded enough, it may take you to whole new directions.
When it comes to apparel, this technology promotes Shop the Look. When you take photos of clothes, blue circles appear over different articles of clothing. If you tap the circle, you can find similar articles that you can purchase via the buyable pins option of the app. Thus, you can use the technology either to get some fashion inspiration or to directly purchase the article.
You can use the new technology not only to generate pins, but also to get ideas from photos that are already on Pinterest. The feature is called Instant Ideas which provides you with pins related to the one you are looking at. The related pins are added directly into the feed and no new window will open and make you lose your place in the board.
Instant Ideas and Shop the Look are already available for the web as well as for the Android and iOS Pinterest apps. Lens will appear in the U.S. in the next few weeks.
