Police Dog Gets Injured After Tackling Car Thief
According to the authorities, last week, while working side-by-side with the Riverside County Police Department, Puskas, a member of Santa Ana’s K-9 brigade, had sustained severe injuries in the line of duty.
The officers were on the lookout for Antonio Padilla Jr., a 37-year-old Riverside County resident, suspected of assaulting a police officer from Garden Grove following a road-rage incident. While on patrol, Puskas and the officers spotted Padilla Jr. and moved in to make the arrest.
The police dog went past his colleagues and straight to Padilla. Following an intense fighting scene, the authorities managed to apprehend the suspect, but not before severely injuring Puskas. The police dog was rushed to the police department’s vet clinic, where Puskas had to undergo surgery.
Unfortunately, the police dog lost most of his teeth, except for the canines, and had a deep cut on his face. Luckily, the vets were able to undo most of the damage caused by Padilla Jr. According to Santa Ana Police Department, their colleague made it through surgery and should return to duty in a few weeks.
One of the police officers who participated in Padilla’s arrest wrote on the Police Department’s official Facebook page that his colleagues were released from the clinic on Tuesday night, but he will need lots attention, good food, and, of course, belly rub in order to recuperate.
As for Padilla Jr., the carjacker who wounded Puskas, he will probably be charged with animal abuse in addition to attacking a law enforcement official with a deadly weapon.
