Moon Express is a private company that claims they can make traveling to the moon possible. They state to have the money necessary to attempt a trip to the moon by the end of the year.
The company Moon Express was enrolled into the competition for Google Lunar X Prize, which consists of $30 million. Now, they state to have raised all the money needed in order to build, test, and even launch a spaceship to the moon. According to their statements, they would be able to launch their uncrewed MX-1E to the moon sometime this year.
Bob Richards, CEO of Moon Express, claims to have raised more than $45 million from private funding and this is everything they need for a moon shooting. The goal of the company is to expand the Earth from an economic and social point of view by using the surface of the moon.
Richards called it “an unexplored eighth continent” and a low cost campaign of lunar exploration would be to the benefit of both students and scientists. As mentioned earlier, the moon may serve many commercial interests. They are planning to launch a few missions in order to explore the moon, prove they have all the technology needed in order to land on the moon, and maybe even mine its surface in search for all kinds of resources, mainly water.
The Google Lunar X Prize was meant to support private companies create spacecrafts that can land on the moon, move 500 meters and then send videos and photos from the surface. Besides Moon Express, three other companies announced they were able to send rockets in space by the end of 2015.
Moon Express has already booked a ride on an Electron rocket owned by Rocket Lab. If everything goes according to the plan, the rocket will take its first test flight sometime this year.
Naveen Jain, the Moon Express co-founder, declared that their initiative to land on the moon is all for the benefit of humanity. By using revolutionary technologies, they are planning to search for the unlimited resources the moon must hide and make use of them. This can only mean immense progress for both technology, science, and economics.
Moon Express is the first private company to obtain the approval to perform flights to the surface of the moon. So far, they are planning to launch five trips aboard the Electron rocket.
