A major scientific breakthrough has been recently achieved, as researchers have been able to perfect rice and create a genetically modified variety that releases significantly less methane into the environment.
The new Eco-friendly rise variety has been described in a recent research project. The findings of this amazing project have been published in the scientific journal Nature and it seems that the new rice species shows true potential for the fight against climate change.
Rice crops are one of the largest sources of methane out there, precisely because rise is so necessary for the survival of so many people. Due to ever greater human population, rice crops have been growing in number impressively in the last few centuries, essentially increasing the methane production along with them.
The team of international researchers that has come up with this new variety has been conducting field tests on it for the last three years and the results are extremely promising, since it seems that the genetically modified species could emit as little as 1o% of the methane quota associated with regular rice species.
The researchers have upgraded the rice plant with a gene from barley in order to generate these significant changes and the results of the study point out to it being one of humanity’s necessary good choices in the fight for preserving the environment.
“This type of rice may be particularly useful in a predicted climate with higher temperatures, which will accelerate methane emissions from paddies, as methane emissions are temperature dependent,” said plant biologist Chuanxin Sun, of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
While the scientific community has generally received the development of this new species as a significant breakthrough, extensive protest is to be expected towards replacing regular rice species with this new variety, precisely because it is a generically modified plant species.
However, this new rice variety has the potential of becoming the new image of GMOs out there, as it perfectly illustrates what a “positive” GMO is capable of doing for the environment.
It remains to be seen what the actions regarding this new rice species will entail, but for the safety of all our futures, we will hopefully be seeing much more of it.
