The impressive gathering of women that took place over the last days might not be the only movement to protest the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The initiative has grown in popularity and Washington might soon face thousands of protesters against Trump’s White House treatment of science.
The movement looks promising already. There is a Facebook group supporting the cause and it has already gathered more than 115,000 participants. The idea emerged from several measures taken by President Trump that scientists think might bring disadvantages to them. Moreover, the measures in question might even undermine the role of science in society. Thus, they are urging everybody who is concerned, even citizens that care about the groundbreaking role of science in our lives, to gather and take action in the sense.
For those who do not know what were the actions the Trump officials have undertaken, here is some information. They have forbidden scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency to speak to the media, said that their work should be reviewed before publishing, and removed the information regarding climate change from the White House website.
Some other institutions that may be subject to disadvantages are the Department of Energy and the Department of the Interior.
After hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the Capitol to support the women’s march last weekend, a Reddit thread came with the idea of a march of the scientists. And they are not the only ones. Environmental activists are planning to organize their own march and they have already announced that, in late April, a similar gathering to this weekend’s will take place in Washington D.C.
The environmentalists declared that they had not been convinced by the initiatives of the scientists, but they had been making preparations for a march long time before. Trump’s actions had convinced them to take action beforehand. For instance, Ann Reimers, a former member of the Department of Energy and present lecturer at the University of Virginia, was present at women’s march and displayed a sign saying “support climate research”.
The initiative of the scientists’ march will help in the raising of awareness regarding the importance science has in our society but also on the persecutions that scientists will be subjected to by the Trump administration.
