You may want to go see a second doctor after you receive a diagnose, since this might save your life. A research performed at the Mayo Clinic organization discovered that 88 percent of people who ask for a second medical opinion receive new diagnoses.
The study was published in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice. It discovered that a worryingly low amount of 12 percent of people receive a diagnose which is confirmed by a second opinion. Thus, patients are advised to go to a second doctor, as they might receive either a confirmation or a new opinion, and they can avoid taking unnecessary treatments or not receiving a treatment they need.
Doctors agree that a second opinion might be beneficial. Some patients can be at a huge risk if they do not receive a certain treatment, and this might be prevented by a wrong diagnose. However, there is no need to be so drastic, as a diagnose might not be completely wrong, but it might underappreciate the seriousness of the disease.
Which opinion should you choose?
The patient might get confused when he receives two conflicting opinions. This is why the researchers came up with a solution to help the patient rule out the faulty diagnose. Some people might be struggling with a disorder which does not recede even after seeing a doctor.
Thus, they advise them to go to a medical facility belonging to a university. These doctors should be more specialized and they should be able to offer a more accurate diagnosis. Sometimes, even a third diagnosis might help.
If you have two opinions which are contrary, it might be hard to know what to choose. Thus, a third doctor might settle the debate. If he goes in favor of one of the already received diagnoses, then this must be your problem and you should receive the treatment accordingly.
Do not hesitate to search for a second opinion
The study looked at 286 patients who came seeking for further medical investigations at Mayo Clinic center between 2009 and 2010. Researchers also found that the costs increase when the diagnosis changes. However, this money is worth spending, since this might save the patient’s life.
People should not refrain for seeking a second medical opinion. This is at the cost of their life, and doctors do not feel embarrassed at all that they might be wrong. They want to do everything for the well-being of their patients.
