The seniors from a local high school in Bethlehem, New Hampshire have inspired the entire nation with an amazing act of altruism. They have unanimously decided to donate the funds for their senior trip to their principal who is battling cancer.
The seniors were set to spend four days at the Rydin’ Hi Ranch in New York, but they realized that the $8,000 that would have been spent on this trip could be far more important to their beloved Principal, Courtney Vashaw, who is going through an immense hardship.
It was only last week that Principal Vashaw decided to let her students know that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, because she felt compelled to offer them an explanation for her upcoming absence.
This short period of time was enough for the seniors to mobilize themselves to conduct this generous act of support. They felt that if it stood in their power to lend a hand to Principal Vashaw, they would gladly do so. And renouncing a four-day trip in order to help her seemed a small price for them to pay for this.
When she was announced that the students were giving up their trip, in order to offer her their support, the Principal was brought to tears and rendered speechless. Despite the fact that she has always worked towards teaching her students the importance of compassion, she had never expected that she would personally experience it.
“They are (a) pretty remarkable, fun, astonishing group of people”, she eventually managed to get out.
The seniors have tremendous respect for Principal Vashaw, whom they have always regarded as an amazing role model. Furthermore, they say that their gesture was also a good way of proving to her the fact that her work has had a great impact on them and that it really mattered to them.
She confessed that it is hard to be in this position and that she finds it extremely difficult to accept the money. She said that she cannot put into words how their gesture has made her feel.
The seniors announced that this was only the beginning of their endeavor towards supporting Principal Vashaw and that they intend to organize fundraisers in the near future. Their gesture is a wonderful example of solidarity, that should be regarded as a great source of inspiration.
