Sleep is one of the key factors that provide us a healthy life. Many of us think that four or five hours of sleep per night is just enough, but being well rested and healthy now assures our health in the future. A study performed at the University of Washington in Seattle showed that the fewer hours of sleep we get, the more likely we are to have a weaker immune system.
Experts usually recommend from seven to eight hours of sleep. This is the time when the internal organs rest and prepare for the next day. Reducing the hours of sleep cause a worse functioning of the organs and make us more vulnerable to illnesses.
Evidence in support of this claim has been brought by the study. The people who are deprived of sleep have their immune system weakened. The shortage of the sleep hours stops the processes in the immune system that circulate white blood cells. The immune system works only at the optimal amount of sleep, this meaning seven or more hours.
The scientists performed the following experiments. They observed that sleep deprived people have a lower antibody response when they receive a vaccine and, if exposed to a virus, they are more likely to get it.
Also, they took blood samples from 11 pairs of twins out of which one is deprived of sleep. They found that the twin with a deficient sleep pattern has a weaker immune system than the other one. For the study, they resorted to identical twins, since genetics is responsible with 31 to 55 percent of sleep behavior, while the sleeping environment accounts for the rest.
Our society is suffering from an acute lack of sleep. The idea that there is not enough time puts a whole lot of pressure on the individual. Thus, he finds himself constantly on the run and thinks that one of the solution to acquire more time is to reduce sleeping hours. There are also a lot of distractions that keep humans awake.
People should not forget how important sleep is. They should prioritize it and make it one of the first things to take care of. Make sure that you get all hours of rest necessary before you find yourself falling ill because you did not sleep enough.
