Soylent faces new problems as a recent announcement revealed that its powder meal famous replacement product has started making people sick.
The company is not at its first problem of the type, as just earlier this month, Soylent announced that it will be ceasing the commercialization and production of it Food Bar 2.0.
The announcement came after a number of consumers accused quite severe adverse reactions to the product. In the case of the Food Bars, the public statement also came with an official advice transmitted to the buyers to throw away any such remaining products, a refund also being offered.
The Soylent powder meal has not garnered such warnings, with the U.S. company announcing on Thursday that it will stop selling the product, but not issuing any further warnings.
The powder meal is usually used as a replacement for solid food and is consumed after being mixed with water.
After a “handful” of customers reported falling ill after consuming the new 1.6 version of the powder meal, Soylent announced that it will be looking into the issue.
The company’s public statement revealed that the new powder meal version shares a number of ingredients with the already recalled food bars. As such, Soylent will be investigating the two products’ composition in order to discover the potential culprit.
Still, the company declared that their tests for toxins, food pathogens, and outside contamination of the respective products have come back negative.
Also, according to statistics, only a very small percent of consumers reported problems after consuming the powder, with a figure of less than 0.1%.
The reduced percentage, coupled with the negative test results, have determined Soylent’s current search for a potential food intolerance which might affect the suffering customers.
The company has not issued an official recall of its powder meal replacement 1.6 and has not advised customers to throw away the product, as it did in the case of the Soylent Food Bar.
This was justified by the small percentage of affected customers, as there seemed to be no reason to alarm those who still beneficiate from the product.
Soylent has already announced that new variants of both the powder meal replacements and the Food Bars will be available as soon as 2017’s first quarter, if not possibly even earlier, as it is yet to be determined what will be the effect of the withdrawal from the market of their most famous product.
As the company will be announcing and verifying test findings with the FDA, it is still commercializing products which have not led to any ill customer cases, products such as Coffiest and the drink pre-mixed Soylent.
