Statins is a drug meant for lowering cholesterol, which is a high risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Seeing how high cholesterol levels are an increasing epidemic in the U.S.,that approximately 25 millions of Americans are prescribed this pill. So many Americans have this medication prescribed to them, that statins constantly top the best-selling prescribed medicine list.
Because this medication is so commonly found in the medicine cabinet of Americans, several studies have been conducted to discover if there are any possible unknown side effects to taking this pill.
At the end of several studies, it was concluded that statin usage increased the risk of memory loss, but there was an important glitch to those studies: they measured the self-reported memory level between patients who took statins regularly and those who were not prescribed any medication.
However, a recent study, meant to take care of that glitch, revealed that a certain degree of memory loss happens for all patients who take any type of cholesterol lowering drugs, so the effect cannot be correlated with the use of statins.
There is a possibility that people who were prescribed statins had already begun having memory problems, but those problems became obvious to the person after she became more attuned to her own body and paid more attention to her everyday behavior.
It can also be perfectly valid, that the people who were not taking statins and who did not report memory loss, did so because they had no trigger to look for and did not pay enough attention to their everyday behavior.
The scientist who conducted the study said that people who are on a new medication are more likely to pay attention to everything they do differently and they go back to their physician and report those problems.
This explanation is quite plausible seeing as most people with high cholesterol levels have difficulties in offering the brain proper oxygenation and nutrients (their arteries are full of atheroma plaques) and some of them also have diabetes, another condition that blocks the brain from receiving what it needs to function in normal parameters.
Most cases of short-term memory loss are reported in the first 30 days after beginning cholesterol lowering treatment. Although short-term memory loss remains a reality among those who begin taking statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs, it is reassuring for the millions of Americans, who take this types of pills daily, that it is not the drug causing the problem, but it is the drug helping the person realize that they have a problem.
