Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk are among the world class scientists who have signed an official letter that assesses the issue of AI along with all the dangers that come with it.
This issue has long been discussed in the scientific community and several warnings have been made so far. Professor Stephen Hawking officially discussed the dangers of artificial intelligence only last year.
While such matters used to be the stuff of Sci-Fi books and movies until recently, it seems that the world is heading in that exact direction and the time has come when we must be cautious in regards to what we unleash on the world.
The common fear of all the scientists who have ever discussed the dangers of AI is that people will not be able to control the machines they will develop. Once something as powerful as artificially intelligent weapons is brought to life, a massive series of horrors is inevitably going to follow, because it takes too little for such things to come into the possession of the wrong people.
Whether or not there are any right hands that could be considered fit to have such immensely powerful weapons at their disposal is an entirely different matter, because the implications such things could actually bring about the demise of the human race and a large part of the planet along with it.
The letter was officially issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by some of the most highly regarded scientists in the entire world, as part of the Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The fact that it was signed by these bright minds provides it with a immense authority and with significant visibility.
The aim of the letter is that artificially intelligent weapons be banned, so that people are not provided with the means to destroy each other. These weapons are a positive change in theory, as they could reduce the number of war casualties when they are implemented.
However, it is much more likely that they will in fact be used to wipe out entire populations, races, or any kind of specific group that is set as their target. And since such weapons could thrive on the black market, they could end the lives of very many innocent people.
“If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable, and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow”said the letter.
Manufacturing these weapons entails extremely low costs compared to other weapons of mass destruction and they could be all too effective in achieving their goal. Therefore, developing them will essentially mean opening a Pandora’s box that we would most likely never be able to close ever again.
Hopefully, the letter will convince the right people to be cautious enough so that the world is never put in this kind of danger, at least not as long as we can help it.
