Researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have found out that using a Fitbit One tracker can increase physical activity among women. It seems that Fitbit One obtained better results than traditional pedometers.
The Fitbit One device is a fitness and health chronometer which was recently released on the market. Since there are so may similar devices available on the market scientists were curious to discover why this particular one is so expensive. The device can be bought from most retailers at the price of $100. According to the study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine postmenopausal women who use Fitbin One have a more intense physical activity.
The research was conducted on 51 postmenopausal women who were overweight. They were required to monitor their own physical activity over a period of four weeks. The women were supposed to walk 10.000 steps every day and to perform 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity every week.
Each woman had to wear an accelerometer so the researchers could track their activity. Half of the women used a Fitbit One tracker, whereas the other half had a plain pedometer.
The findings of the research indicate that women who used a Fitbit One tracker added 789 extra steps to the 6.000 steps, which represented the weekly average before the study started. Moreover they also increased the time dedicated to physical activity by one hour per week. On the other hand women who used a normal pedometer did not report any improvements.
The researchers concluded that the progress observed in the group of women who wore the Fitbit One tracker was significant. The lead-author of the study, Lisa Cadmus-Bertram from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Kinesiology is of the opinion that if women want to improve their physical condition they should a fitness tracker such as Fitbit One.
What this tracker does is set new goals for its users and whenever a previous goal is reached the device congratulates the users. Receiving positive feedback from the small device makes people enhance the amount of physical activity.
Cadmus-Bertram also drew attention to the limitation which such fitness trackers have:
“Trackers are an exciting new tool in the toolbox of behavioral science, but they aren’t a silver bullet. It can’t do the exercise for you, but it can make improving your lifestyle a bit easier and more fun.”
