Consumer Reports warns that the number of children harmed by laundry detergent pods continues to increase in spite of the fact that people were warned about this and the fact that packages were changed multiple times.
The liquid detergent in the laundry pods is very colorful and it looks like candy for children. In addition it also has a squishy texture and all of these make if very attractive for them. Most of the time children put the pods in their mouth because at their age this is the best method of analyzing new objects.
Laundry detergent pods first appeared in 2012 and they are very easy to use, but Consumer Reports recommends the use of other detergents and tries to raise awareness through its latest report. Consumers Report is a non-profit organization which analyzes an extended range of consumer products looking both at their safety and reliability.
According to their report on laundry detergent pods in the first half of 2015 more than 6.000 cases of children inhaling the pods were reported at poison control centers. The children were under 5 years old. Not only the rates are very high but they will most likely surpass the number of children who came in contact with pods last year, that is 11.714 children. There is no explanation to why pods are so dangerous, but it is certain that in the case of pods containing powder detergent far fewer cases of intoxication were reported.
Liquid detergent pods contain a very concentrated washing solution which can be used to wash the whole laundry load. This is the reason why the chemicals contained in them are a lot more powerful than those used in common laundry detergent. The package of laundry detergent pods decomposes easily inside the washing machine and that is why when children place it in their mouths the package breaks. Thus the children swallow a big quantity of solution which can lead to severe issues and even death if the child does not reach the hospital in due time.
The most efficient way to prevent this type of situation is to supervise the children and make sure that the place where the children stay does not enable them to reach life-threatening items like laundry detergent pods.
